A source close to Kerry tells NBC News that he was trying to make a "tough and honest joke" about Bush and that in the process he omitted two words which changed the intended meaning. Per the source, Kerry meant to say that he can't "overstress the importance of a great education" and that "if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy... You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq." Kerry mistakenly dropped the "getting us" from his initial remarks.

All Kerry had to do was say that, apologize to the troops for accidentally insulting them, and he would have been fine. The fact that he didn't do those simple, sensible things says that he said exactly what he meant to say.

When a man is too stupid to stop digging the hole, you either tell him to stop or throw dirt on top of him.

If he's claiming that's what he intended to say, he's flat-out lying. Bush was a Harvard and Yale graduate, whose grades were as good as or better than Kerry's.

Yeah, that was my take on it as well: "I stupidly dropped two words, it was a terrible mistake and if it were possible I'd apologize individually to every soldier, past and present. Since I can't do that I would like to issue as public apology to them as I can."

But his words today were deranged. I keep trying to figure out a political angle, maybe getting out the moon bat vote, but that didn't work too well before.

So the only answer left is that he is truly deranged (not that there was much question, but this is the nadir of political stupidity).
