For starters he supported the wide open immigration (read amnesty) bill in the Senate, that the Reps in the House were able to stop - and yes living here in Texas that is one heck of a major concern - and should be for everyone else that opposes the ongoing flow of 25 million illegals into this country Likewise IMHO he is not a strong and forceful personality that is needed for this type of critical role going into 2008.... Looking at other posters comments I'm not alone in my "opinions"....

No those in the know are afraid of the damage his insane illegal alien amnesty bill would do to this country's economy and security for this and the next generation. Unfortunately Mel puts too much stock in his surname instead of the integrity of the USA.

So economic protectionism is good, and we should always drill everywhere, all the time, is the conservative position?

It almost makes you wish we had the power to form a new, conservative party that the real conservatives could all join and bring sanity back to DC.

It already exists. It's called the Constitution Party.

Asa Hutchinson would be an ideal choice to lead the RNC.

Maybe Steele declined. Maybe he's getting a better appointment in the administration that will serve him better politically.

I'm not bothered by Martinez. He might be temporary. It's my understanding that Melman or whatever his name wants to leave ASAP. January I think.

...I envision a leader who is capable of forming alliances with current and new congressional candidates who are willing to run to the right with pride..

You mean someone like MacaCain? [KIDDING!]

As long as we are thinking toward to 2008, I think it is only fitting to revise what Senator MacaCain’s actions to sabotage the Republican Party in the past two years, especially as he comtemplates running for President. Let's remember...

Won't work, both are full-time, and Martinez is presumably to show an Hispanic face for the GOP, but Hispanics outside FL still won't know who he is no matter how many interview programs he sits on.

I'll bet NO ONE, especially conservatives, will agree with this appointment!

Maybe next election MORE conservatives will stay home or vote for Democrats and then THOSE conservatives can REALLY SHOW THE PARTY who is boss!!

Because the ACU is on crack. John McCain has a very good ACU rating too. Why don't we make him party chair?

The ACU rating is meaningless. This guy is pro-amnesty and against drilling to end our dependence on foreign oil.

Most importantly though, he's BORING. This does nothing to energize the base and doesn't give us the energetic spokesperson that we need to help us win in 08.

This is a loser's pick. And it would be a loser's pick if his name was Mel Smith.
