Your allegation is without base. Reagan was divorced, and many social conservatives voted for him. My concern for Newt is that he address (1) his work as Speaker in which he presided over a very poorly run 1998 campaign which let Clinton off the hook; and (2) his difficult personal life, well beyond his divorce.

I would never describe anyone as unclean, because with Christ all can be clean.

I think that Newt has unique qualifications for leadership and effectiveness if put in the right slot. The tough work in politics is done below the presidential level. I do not think that Newt is presidential timber based on his quixotic temperament as well as past demonstrations of repeated marital unfaithfullness. Character is important when considering the level of responsibility a person can be trusted with. Being the leader of the free world, i.e, President of the United States of America, not only requires a high level of intelligence, but fidelity to the job, and self sacrifice beyond the ordinary. Newt is no more a sinner than any of us, but he has fallen short in areas that IMO disqualify him for the task of leading this great country.

As I already explained, there's a difference in appointment positions and elected positions. Running Newt again would show that we want to repeat the same mistakes we've made in the past. Rummy was not elected.

Against Hillary, it would be an interesting skeletons-in-the-closet contest. With all her baggage, I don't see why anybody thinks she is a credible candidate.

The main difference is that a person with a conscience feels guilt and often communicates shame when someone brings up their past misdeeds. The sociopath, however, denies they ever took place; or if they did, that they really hurt anyone. Just making the comparison...

When Condi Rice's name is added, she is always #1 with every faction of Republicans, including those factions that disagree with her position on their favorite issue.

I would love to see Condoleezza Rice as president. However, as a resident of the Socialist Republic of Maryland, I was deeply shocked and horrified to see the treatment of the excellent Michael Steele in the last race, particularly the snubbing and ungracious behavior by other blacks, who regard conservatives as turncoats. It wasn't pretty.

It made me rethink whether our nation is really capable of doing the mature thing. I have newfound doubts, after seeing what was done to Steele, about Rice's candidacy in the strategic sense -- whether she has enough fire in her soft-spoken presentation to be regarded as a war leader and savior of a wobbling republic, as was the "iron lady" Margaret Thatcher.

Certainly, there is forgiveness in our ranks, as our election of former frat-boy Dubya clearly showed. It is the forgiveness of the swing voters that is the problem in such a divided electorate. You can be sure there will be no forgiveness from the Enemedia.

I think that the problem with perceived "baggage" on the Republican side is more aptly described as a problem that Republicans have defending themselves. If it were me and I were getting attacked like some of them have, I would turn the table and point out that while yes, I did fall out of love with my wife and into love with a staffer, at least I never drowned her.

I'd support anyone (including Newt) who has demonstrated the communication skills and killer instinct to bring the House Republicans into line and strike terror into the hearts of leftist slugs like Pelosi and Murtha. Newt understands how the system works and can get results. For a time he was so powerful he even had Slick licking his boots instead of Monica's dress, until the press deemed him a threat to the Dems agenda and hounded him out of office.

That's what everyone on this thread needs to understand. It's not enough to be good at the job: a viable candidate must be able to manage the Fifth Column effectively.

The press is operating like a third political party; they will never back Newt. Reagan was extraordinary in his acting-honed ability to override them at their own communications game. It would take another person similarly gifted. Intellect is not enough; presentation is very important. This is where Bush could not measure up, much as I love the guy and understood his verbal shorthand. He and I are from a similar walk of life and have a compatible frame of reference. Other ethnicities and subgroups simply could not understand the man.
