I have yet to see any real evidence that a hard-line on immigration is a political winner.

Put that way the same could be said about abortion, or gun ownership, etc. Yet they are issues that positively influence elections, if the case is articulated properly.

Problem is few are willing to make the case, for whatever reason.

The most plausible reason for the marriage amendemnt not passing was that the homosexual lobby said there was also a law against homosexual marriage and that a constitutional amendment was not needed.

Just wait until Napolitano's judges overturns the law.

Try actually checking out the initiatives they DID pass. They are FAR more important and restrictive than those silly things you mention.

Yep. Thought so.

No Graf lost because CD8 leans left. Right out of the primary Graf was way behind the polls. The minute Kolbe announces his retirement CD8 could be safely moved to the Dem column, then when a hardliner won the GOP primary it became all done but the crying. It also didn't help that sometimes Graf comes off as a little crazy. The RNC shouldn't have given him money, they'd have just been pissing it waway.

Already tried with prop 200 which mandates showing ID to vote.. went to the 9th, they overturned and the SCOTUS overturned the 9th. So, let em try. We "Zonies" are very different from Easterners, we don't like being told what to do.

Hayworth was kicked out by the outraged base, not miffed middle voters.

Is the "outraged base" that stupid?

Several Freepers who live in the 8th said they knew people who voted against Graf because of incorrect statements that were applied to him and his inability to get the word out. I'm in a very conservative part of the State, so I have to go by what people who live in the Tucson area have to say.... but, yes, it's a very liberal district.

[ How large was the Legal and Illegal alien VOTE this cycle?... / But, I thought Mitchell was more anti-illegal immigration than Hayworth. ]

Same question?...

Outraged = Abramhoff, lobby $$$ to his wife and Stem Cells. It was relentless and Mitchell comes across as a kindly Grandfather-type and was well known to the locals since he had been a popular Mayor.

I'm in Tucson. Between it being a lib district, Graf advertising himself as very single issue, and the occasional deep-ender comment by Graf it's amazing it was as close as it turned out to be.

It's not that immigration lost J.D. the election, it's that it didn't help him at all, not even with the base. I've seen no electoral evidence immigration adds votes, even in Republican districts. It's one of those issues that shows well in polls, but it doesn't influence people in the booth.

I think you are right about right to life - I think we have been afraid to press while we were ahead and now we have more pro aborts in congress! I believe in incremental gains and now that we have lost Rick Santorum, Jim Talent et al., it will be much tougher. I know that Democrats for Life has sent out a letter claiming that many of the new Demos who won were pro life but I will believe it when I see their voting record. I think only a handful are really pro life. As for South Dakota, had they put in the rape/incest exceptions, the bill would have passed - without a doubt.

Buuuutttt...it's the RINO's fault! If we ran Graf clones in every district, we'd win every race if it weren't for the RINO's! Clearly, since I like Graf, and deem him to be acceptably 'conservative' as I define it, he's the greatest candidate ever!

/sarcasm

I notice you didn't answer the question.

The Bush/Brownback position on immigration is consistent with tough enforcement, it's just not consistent with the Tancredo/Buchannan anti-immigrant lunacy that, unfotunately, far too many Republicans got caught up in, and paid the price.

Your arguments against a 'hard line' on illegal immigration could well be applied to the abortion issue. Shall we then compromise on that one?

Didn't Hayworth receive money from the Indian tribes before any Abramhoff scandal?

The money Hayworth received was never tied to Abramhoff, was it?

Hardly worth not supporting Hayworth, one of the better guys on illegal immgration.

In the end, what it really says is you can be the most personable guy on Earth, but if you get swept up in scandal of any kind and you are a Republican, you WILL pay for it at election time. I only wonder if the people left in DC that didn't run this time around (Senators) learned anything from this election.

Even Nappy isn't that stupid. She saw the margins they won by and we have recall here in Arizona.

The way I read it JD was in charge of an appropriations committee in charge of Indian affairs. In his job it made sense that he would get money from Abramhoff (since it was being passed out like water) but, the last I heard, like Harry Reid he didn't give it back when it turned out to be tainted.

The stem cell thing was totally bogus (if you ask me) because Udalls granddaughter ran these ads over and over and over that she had Lupus and now she would die because of JD Hayworth.. I have Lupus and she is full of BS, but this all started the same time as the MJFox blow up and they stepped in here and used that against JD bigtime.
