US Catholic Church seeks to find root of priest sex abuse

The US Roman Catholic Church has asked a criminology school to delve into the darkest pages of its history by probing the causes of a priest sex abuse scandal.

At a meeting due to end Thursday in the eastern city of Baltimore, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops voted to disburse 335,000 dollars to fund the first three phases of a study by New York's John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

"It will be a groundbreaking study, never done before in the US, nor in the world," Bishop Gregory Aymond, who chairs the Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People, told AFP.

"We don't know what would come out of it, but we are going to tell the truth," said Aymond, of Austin, Texas.

In 2002, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice had made a list of complaints and pedophilia cases in the US Catholic Church since 1985, when one of the first scandals came to light with the case of a Louisiana priest.

The university will now look into the "social and historical context" of sex abuse to see if such cases are more frequent in the Church than in the rest of society, notably in schools and youth clubs, Aymond said.

The Church wants to "look at what is unique" in the priest sex abuse crisis, he said.

The first part of the study would be completed in 2008 and made public, although the names of suspected priests would be omitted.

In the second part, the university will evaluate the Church leadership's response to sex abuse cases.

"We want to see where we failed and made some mistakes, and learn from those who handled it well," Aymond said.

The study will also paint a psychological profile of pedophiliac priests by reviewing cases in treatment centers.

The review will aim to show "to what extent is a priest sexual abuser profile the same as the psychological profile of the non-priests who are sex offenders," Aymond said.

The university will also interview abuse victims and examine education at seminaries over the decades.

The majority of priests accused of sex abuse were trained in the 1960s and 1970s in seminaries where psychological tests and sexuality education have since been introduced.

A final phase of the study will make proposals on how to prevent sex abuse and help victims.

"Our goal is to ascertain the causes of the clergy sexual abuse crisis and if we need to change any method we have now," said Teresa Kettlekamp, the executive director of the bishops conference's Office of Child and Youth Protection, which was created in 2002, in the wake of the sex abuse scandal.

But the study would also be useful to schools and youth groups, Church officials said.

"The pathology of abusing children isn't unique; it's a societal problem," Kettlekamp said.

"We are hoping it will be a big, big help to the society in general," she said.

Used to have my child in Catholic school. I found it unreal that I needed to submit to a criminal background check to even be allowed to volunteer in the school, while they ordain the true culprits.

The cause...in a word....CELIBACY!

Now let's see the logical argument for this.

"Bear in mind that the abuse is almost exclusively statutory rape of gay teenagers by gay priests."

Or at least the teenagers are gay by the time the priest gets done with them!

Yes if those darn school teachers didn't have vows of celibacy there wouldn't be so much teacher/child molestation....

They're paying John Jay Criminal College $1,000,000 in three installments to tell them that they ordained homosexual priests?

... who had pedophilia (i.e. chicken-hawking) tendencies?

1 Cor 7:32-35

I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to please the Lord; but the married man is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried woman or girl is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit; but the married woman is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.

What do you make of those 'which have made themselves'?

Matthew 19:12

For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

I think I have it. You ordain a bunch of homos.

I had a nice lengthy response in the works, but you summed it up in 11 words.

The Church wants to "look at what is unique" in the priest sex abuse crisis, he said.

We know what is unique. 90% of the victims were teenage boys.

Nope, they sure don't, otherwise they wouldn't keep admitting them to the seminaries.

My family has been Catholic for at least 1000 years, and I must say this tragedy in the Church is a nightmare to me.

How do I know, for example, that the man I'm confessing to isn't buggering boys, now or in the past?

I hate the thought of it.

Perhaps this study will answer some questions? I hope so.

My God, what a mess.

Well, if celibacy wasn't a requirement for priesthood, it wouldn't be such a magnet for homosexuals and pedophiles.

Guilty, repressed, catholics with psychological, sexual damage who don't want to act out their psychosis (homosexuality). They become priests and don't find a traditional psychiatrist who can help them with this PSYCHOLOGICAL problem, they remain homosexual.

___

Follow up to my last post, re: pedophelia.

It's becoming more apparent that this behavior is "hard-wired", meaning a problem with one of the brain functions, much like serial killers who have frontal lobe damage/ill-working frontal lobes which leaves them with no conscience, remorse, etc.

You CAN have these things hard wired in your brain and not act on them also, although it is very difficult, and if you have a bad upbringing, experiences, etc, these flaws will rise to the surface.

It's a case of nature/nurture, science/nurture if you will.

Homosexualty falls into the category of early childhood, psychological issues, perhaps a predisposition, but the "gay gene" has not been found, although I can literally say I've seen no less than a dozen newscast, articles saying the "gay gene" has been found.

Homosexuality is a psychological/abnormal issue, some people are depressed/bipolar/obsessive compulsive/self destructive, etc.,etc.

Some people are homosexual, that's why they try and introduce teaching, normalizing this abnormal behavior at an early, confused, psychological state and it should NOT be taught in schools as "normal".

You can take a kid and make him a criminal, you can take a kid and make him a homosexual.

A large percentage of homosexual men were abused as children.

I'm sure I'll get some grief for this, but a friend of mine was one of the top shrinks in the USA (RIP), he treated homosexuals, necropheliacs, etc.

Wow, did he have some stories!

Actually, no. I don't think the Catholics intentionally hired homosexuals who were more disposed to molesting teen-age boys than an average homosexual. It's a numbers game. The evidence I have seen suggests that homosexuals are more prone to this kind of behavior than heterosexuals. So if you hire enough of them, it happens--especially if the church lets the offenders avoid consequences for many years.

Some sexual abuse of teens in the church will happen no matter how careful the church is. But the numbers could be greatly reduced by not hiring homosexual priests and by allowing severe punishment (both ecclesiastical and secular) of those who offend what should be a clear line.
