The cultural issues formed an integral part of the Republican rises to power in both 1980 and 1994. They are the product of bleeding-heart conservatism, people who really care for every life and who really care for the soul of our society.

I concur, and would go even so far as to say that the Pro-Life issue exclusively, being boldly vocalized and specifically proclaimed by both Ronald Reagan and G.W. Bush is the reason for their election to the presidency. It is not merely that Life is sacred to the majority of American voters, who recognize, as our Founders did, that life is a gift from God, it is that God's blessing is upon the just. Amen.

I firmly believe that if we as a people get this one issue right, that of the protection of life at every stage and age and level of development, then God will bless America again.

Let's be "Lincoln Republicans" and preachers like Martin Luther King, Jr., a people who comprehend the horror of the treatment of any human being as product, or sub-species; a movement that will not tire until all human beings are recognized by our laws, by every branch of government, as truly equal and equally free. Amen.

To the extent that the "nuts" comments came from low-level people in the Bush White House, it is a personnel problem. Such people shouldn't have been hired, or should have been fired as soon as their attitudes became clear. To the extent that they came from higher-ups, I would bet they were referring to a small minority of family-values activists, who at times, especially behind closed doors, may well come across as "nuts." Anyone who knows anything about politics knows that there is a lot of blunt, tough talk in private. Sometimes you cuss out people who you're not only allied with, but really sympathize with and respect. It's a frustrating business with a lot at stake, including egos. When James Baker many years ago said "f--- the Jews, they don't vote for us anyway," was he being anti-Semitic, or just impolite in a moment of frustration? I'd bet on the latter. Mr. Kuo and those who take his whining seriously need to grow up. Things are not always as bad as they seem.

I agree. The Bible warns that the wisdom of God is foolishness in man's eyes. I think there are many people in the DBM that don't understand the power of God and make jokes because of it. There is NO doubt in my mind that GWB is a sincere Christian. As someone who has lived for over 30 years with an alcoholic, there is NOTHING except the power of God that could have enabled President Bush to stop drinking as he did and maintain that decision for 20 years. I don't know about Karl Rove religious beliefs, but I find it hard to believe that he would be so close to the President if he is truly an atheist who makes fun of Christians. I also find it hard to believe that Condi Rice, who was raised in the Southern Baptist tradition, would make fun of Christians.

I saw David Kuo on 60 Minutes and I did not believe a word he said. I would also like to see some proof that Rudy was such a disaster on the campaign trail. Ralph Reed lost because his opponent was able to link him to Abramoff. I think that President Bush is one of the best campaigners in the Republican Party, but not even he was able to save the Republicans this year, although I do think he helped make the elections much closer than they would have been otherwise.

I agree with you. Every single person with an agenda is claiming their cause is the reason the republicans lost. Just like each claimed it was because of them Dubya won in 2004.

The simple fact is there is a lot of reasons they lost, all of those reasons just as important as any other.

I agree that it is the Lord God that raises up "Kings", but you might want to add "if it is your will" to your tag line!!

I think the republicans just took conservatives for granted and thought we would vote just to keep Pelosi from being speaker. Many did, but I think many more just stayed home

I like that, but it's because my older brother preaches from the same gospel you are preaching from.

Have you heard Cardinal Mahony speak out against any of his pro Abortion Catholic Politician friends like Mayor Villagarosa?

Is there any Cardinal in the USA who has aggressively criticized any Pro Abortion Catholic Politician by name?

Where, on the national scene, have all the conservatives gone?

Every a**hole who has a grudge again President Bush and the Republican party is now telling us why we lost and how we can never win unless we follow what he or she tells us.

The poster boy for the RATpublicans. Your way didn't work so well, did it? Our way, Conservatism, works everytime it's tried. Try it, you'll like it. Blackbird.

I don't think you have proved your allegation that to a man everyone Guilani campaigned for lost.

Now ask yourself why some sanctimonious "conservatives" spend all their time telling us what WE did wrong.

Why? Because you're wrong, that's why. You were called on it constantly, for years, and in your arrogance (the only Principle you hold dear), you lost. Deal with it. Blackbird.

Where, on the national scene, have all the conservatives gone?

You have the likes of Tom Coburn, who actually believes in core conservative values of limited government and a pork-free diet.

And he's despised by the likes of Trent Lott, who has 1,001 recipes for inserting pork into legislation.

So who is a Senate GOP leader? Why, Trent Lott, of course. He was a noodle-spined Majority Leader when it came to conservative values but has fangs of steel when it comes to defending abuse of earmarks - one of the factors that led to the GOP defeat in 2006. And that shows you that the GOP isn't serious about learning from defeat.

It's one thing to shoot yourself in the foot. It's a whole 'nother thing to reload and empty the clip into the other foot. Which is what the GOP appears to be doing, given their leadership choices after the defeat (with the possible exception of McConnell, which was largely neutralized by the choice of Lott).

I've heard all their explanations for why we lost.

I'm also involved in the local Republican party(county committee man).I too have one reason we lost. Remember this past summer when all the dirt came out on William Jefferson dem. La.(as Rush puts it) The FBI armed with search warrants raided Jefferson's capitol hill office and seized incriminating evidence.

What did Speaker Hassert do? He called a press conference on the Capitol steps raising Hell about the FBI raiding their "special" offices claiming separation of powers. The demo's for the last several years have been screaming corruption in the Republican party and Hassert demonstrated that there must be something to it.

If I were Hassert I would have called the same press conference and raised Hell about the corruption in the Democrat party and DEMAND Pelosie(sp) BOOT Jefferson out of Congress!

You are right. That is what Hassert should have done.

Have any idea why he would be reluctant to do so? Do the Dims have the goods on a bunch of Republicans? We all know that Jefferson, Pelosi, Murtha and Reid are crooked as can be but nobody in the Republican leadership stands up and calls them what they are.

In this article, Hemnick is talking about the PERCEPTION of the voters. The facts may be out of line with that perception, but voters vote (or stay home) based on their perceptions.

Republicans misunderstood that WRT several issues and lost the majority. To not understand that between now and Nov 2008 is to lose another election.

After you lose, you have two choices: continue to insist you are right, or learn from the loss and make the adjustments for next time.
