SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - U.S. Coast Guards have seized a submarine carrying 3.5 tons of cocaine in the Pacific Ocean off Costa Rica and arrested three Colombians on board, the Costa Rican Coast Guard said on Sunday.

The submarine appeared to be a makeshift vessel unlike military submarines or those used by oceanographers. It could only submerge 6 feet under water, Costa Rican Coast Guard spokesman Jose Antonio Fallas told Reuters.

"My own preference would be to use an ordinary, inconspicuous sail boat, drop the "package" at night in water 30 or 40 feet deep, and give the GPS coordinates to people on land who'd make the pickup."

That's an old smuggling method, been there done that.

Hey, coke addicts of America, thanks loads.

Hey, control FReaks of Amerika, thanks loads. Thanks for the expended blood and treasure, thanks for the continued efforts in the failed WOsD's, which has led to our Country being awash in these Drug's, and finally thanks for allowing the underworld to flourish to the point of building FRigging submarines. Yeah, thanks a lot. Blackbird.

Many of them do that ,, flying out of Havana they air drop to predetermined locations for pleasure boats out of San Juan or the Keys to pick up,,, the coast guard can't pick out who is picking up the cargo with so many boats on the water..

The scary part of this story is how far they got without being noticed. Just think if they would have been carrying something much more sinister and had landed on U.S. soil.

To add to what SampleMan said, a sub running at that depth could get air via a snorkel. I agree, though, that if it was spotted the Coast Guard and the Navy would on it like ugly on a toad.

I'll bet there's a lot of these things laying on the bottom of the ocean between here and Columbia.

Driving a DIY submarine is a good way to get dead.

A few years ago, the Colombian police busted some druggies who were trying to build a proper sub in a warehouse in Bogota.

They had hired unemployed Russian naval architects for the job.

And I can't even get a refill on the codeine for my ear infection. Criminal that I am, I might turn around and say hey, never mind the excruciating pain and sleepless nights, I'm going to resell this stuff and get rich.
