Can a single GOP Congresscritter stay away from the pork chops?

This article is right on. I'm not holding my breath that the Republicans will morph back to conservatives or that the Democrats will hold the line on spending. I don't think either party can change that much in 2 years.

"Enough articles about why we lost. We all know why, and it was many reasons, not one. The author must be short of real material for an article. This is the what, the 200th article on why we lost?"

I can understand your frustration. However, I also think we need to remind ourselves daily of our failures, to analyze and rethink them, and most importantly, learn to never make those mistakes again.

That having been said, I think the issue of pork is a small one, or perhaps a symptom of a larger one - corruption. Republican gave the media and the public the rope by which they hung themselves - Cunningham, Foley, Abramoff, Weldon, et al. Someone at RNC leadership needs to push to form a task force or special unit to proactively prevent such abuse, and to mitigate damage if smoke is on the horizon.

Sometimes one's greatest enemies are within the ranks, and even within one's self, and you don't even know it, because it has become so familiar.

"Republicanism, not conservatism, lost on Election Day. Republicans were elected to govern as conservatives, and they became liberals. Power for the sake of power was placed above all else-a bad situation for any party. Republicans may find it prudent to know that a poll last week reported by the Wall Street Journal found that most voters were for less government and lower taxes."

In a nutshell, this explains the downfall of the pubbies.

There is no justification for Republicans turning their backs on the President when doing so greatly endangers the Nation. There is no justification for Cut Off Their Nose to Spite Their Face politics. It is immature.

Thank you. I am tired of hearing conservatives blamed for this defeat when it occurred because of the constant lies of the Treason Media. Conservatives do not act like spoiled children who get enraged because they don't get everything they want all the time.

He says nothing new that hasn't been said for the last 3-4 years. I'm not into self flagellation, time to move on, we all know Reagan conservatism wins, we don't have to create a new plan, it's already known and very successful when it is followed.

I bet 95% of voters don't even know what "pork" is and the 10% that do don't even care about it enough to read up on who the culprits are (READ: both parties).

The election was lost for one simple reason: constant media harping on one of the most successful military operations in history, the invasion and occupation of 30 million by a force of 150,000 with less loss of life that in a battle for one island in four weeks in WWII.

How many times do you hear the media go on about pork? The elderly in this country (who comprise most of the vote) read the paper and watch tv and therefore heard one thing every day for two years: WE'RE DYING IN IRAQ!!!!

I actually think that dead horse needs a continued whacking. There are many reasons why the GOP got stomped this election and I think some still don't get it or care to learn from past mistakes.

The article says this: Republicans were elected to govern as conservatives, and they became liberals.

You said: There is no justification for Republicans turning their backs on the President when doing so greatly endangers the Nation.

I see this as Bush & the psuedo-conservatives turning their backs on their campaign positions and their base, not the other way around.

When Bush lets Teddy write the education bill, and enacts part of HillaryCare via Medicare prescriptions, I don't think it matters if we are behind him or not. He'll get the votes he wants from the Democrats.

As far as it 'greatly endangers the Nation', I think not. The damage is done, as shown by the cheering in Iran. And Bush will do as he wants, and thumb his nose at the conservatives. We'll do great damage to the nation by not building a real conservative candidate for 2008. Bush will not involve himself in worrying about Republican chances in 2008, certainly not conservative Republican chances or he would have picked a VP who could pickup the conservative banner.

It is simply a flat out 100% LIE to claim the GOP turned "liberal."

Bush campaigned on the prescription drug plan. He did not change AT ALL. So that is a lie as well.

There is no candidate acceptable to you or anyone else believing such silly lies who would have a prayer at getting elected.

It is also quite stupid to believe Bush was concerned about 08 in 00 in regards to the VP. It is, however, consistent with the rest of your post.

Don't forget the incessant drumbeat over Mark Foley's indiscretions.

In my congressional district, the Democrat candidate ran ads accusing the Republican incumbent of not doing enough to prosecute the War on Terror or fight corruption in Washington. Of course, the ads said nothing about what the Democrat would do; they were intended merely smear the Republican.

The frustrating thing is that the Republicans generally will not fight back. Had they gone on the offensive, they might have retained control of Congress. A few vigorous public investigations—Sandy Berger, William Jefferson, and Harry Reid come immediately to mind—and the Democrats would have dropped the corruption issue like a hot rock.

Hits the nail on the head. People will opt for real Democrats over faux ones every time. Real Conservatives, OTOH, win.

If it is so easy, why didn't we just do it?

Because we need to CONSTANTLY remind ourselves of the benefits to do so, and remind ourselves of the consequences of the FAILURE to do so.
