Wife and two daughters of senior editor James Kim found in Oregon; search is still on for James Kim, who left the car on foot two days ago.
The wife and daughters of missing CNET senior editor James Kim have been found alive and airlifted to a local hospital, authorities announced at a press conference in Merlin, Ore., Monday afternoon.
James Kim left the car on snowshoes two days ago to seek help and has not been found, the official said. The search for him continues.
According to the official speaking at the news conference, the conditions of Kati, Penelope and Sabine are not yet known. More details are expected at a press conference at 5 p.m. PST, which CNET will stream live.
Kati Kim reportedly flagged down a helicopter rented by families of the missing persons.
After searches in Oregon's Curry and Douglas counties, new information on missing CNET senior editor James Kim and his family narrowed the search back to the Bear Camp area in Josephine County, according to reports Monday.
A cell phone tower received a signal from one of the family's cell phones at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday near Glendale, but officials say the signal is only an indicator the family could have been within 26 miles of Glendale at that time, according to a report in The Oregonian.
I dont' know,,if they are in one piece, he took them off. Apparently he is below the snow line. I wonder how cold it is where he is. And how deep is the "gorge". Did he want to slide down something.
but the fact that he took off the pants, assuming they are iin one piece, is not that bad to me.
OR your local knowledge is helpful in this type of situation. I can only imagine how bad it is in there. My biggest fear is he was hurt and is incapacitated somehow...that would make the situation very dire indeed.
It is a second pair - some gray ones he had with him (sounds like sweats or thermals) - not the blue jeans he had on when he left Kati and the girls.
Exactly. The worst nightmare we all would have is being within earshot of rescuers and being too weak to answer to make a sound or even move to throw a rock or something.
No offense was taken. I knew it was stupid then and I know it was stupid now.
Dude...put the bong down!
;-)
I'm just kidding. I love Hitchhiker's Guide. Tell ya what, you have the Gargle Blaster ready and I'll have one with you when they find this fellow!
I'm fighting it but I'm getting a terrible feeling about this as well ... based mostly on the head searcher indicating that virtually everything James did since leaving his wife was not helpful.
It is possible he could just not stand it anymore.
I will continue to hope though.
Speaking of bongs, her parents looked like straight out hippies. Dad with full white beard and long hair ... apparently he is an MD. I was expecting something different.
BTW, this will be on Hannity and Greta tonight says O'Reilly.
Thank you! Which one? My FR profile or my blog?
I read he had some lighters. Maybe he'll light a big bonfire tonight and be found. I wonder where you sleep at night in places like that. A lean-to out of branches?
I'm also wondering what the other personal item was that authorities will not disclose. Did he leave the pants because he wanted to make sure something of personal value was found with them? Could he have laid the pants out and put his wedding ring on them, or a watch that was a family keepsake, etc? Why would they be specific about the pants but not the other item?
Hopefully I have an overactive imagination, but I can imagine leaving behind items of personal value if I suspected I was about to scale a sheer cliff and my body may not be found.
I wonder, how steep and how deep was the gorge? I don't think he had rope or anything. Would anyone try to go down a steep gorge without rope or something?
Your point re: leaving the road is an excellent one. Aside from choosing this route, leaving the road was the biggest miscalculation of this episode. I can understand arguments for staying with the car as well as leaving it, but not for leaving the road to wander into a stream basin.
Your profile. You have a blog?
BTW ...
Searchers believe James Kim walked 2 to 3 miles along the same road the family had driven and then went into a creek drainage area. Asked why Kim did that, Anderson said, "I'm hoping on having the opportunity to ask him that question when we find him."

?The Kims were warned that the Bear Camp Road was dangerous this time of year when they stopped into the Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce about 20 miles south of Portland, Ore., on November 25 around 1:30 p.m. PST, said Logan Crozier, a visitor center representative at the office.
The Kims had used Mapquest to map out a route but wanted a scenic route to the coast, Crozier said Tuesday. The visitor center representative who was working that day gave the Kims a map printed off an unidentified Internet site, he said. "She warned them that by the time they got down there (southern Oregon), it would more than likely be dark, and she cautioned them not to take the route," he added.
Yep. See the link, down there in my tagline?
Not in a right state of mind. I think OregonRancher might concur that the only reliable way to get to the bottom of some of those gorges is with a bridge and a bungee cord.
I'm so confused on where the car was found. They've said over and over that it was near the Bear Camp Viewpoint turnout, or actually in it.
I had coordinates 42.63056N, -123.83611W, decimally. Then you or someone gave me 42 40' 40.12"N 124 04' 31.65"W, which is closer to Marial and Illahe.
Then, later articles today, which very well may be wrong, have been saying they were 15 miles from Bear Camp Road. Is only a small part of that Merlin-Galice-Agness road called Bear Camp Road?
I thought the whole road could be called Bear Camp Road. By my initial calculations, they would have been 15-16 miles west of I-5, ON Bear Camp Road. Does that make sense?
Also, where is the the Graves Creek bridge in relation to all this?
Is what would be called the "Bear Camp area" or just "Bear Camp" at the far western end of this road, before it becomes Hwy 575 and hits 101, then goes down to Gold Beach? TIA
Oh man...and to take two young children along on a route you've been warned is dangerous. That's just unbelievable.
In a way, now I really hope he's found alive, because I can't imagine the all-consuming guilt he must be feeling as he thinks his family may have perished due to his poor judgment.
Yeah, I agree it's a stunner.
He may have gone off to die. After all, he said he would be back in just a few hours.
They are searching the 5 mile point as though he never got further.
Just bookmarked it. I used to have a Beetle. Kept it for over 20 years even when I bought new cars.
