More Conservatives Mull ’08 Bid, But May Lack That Wow Factor

Former Virginia Gov. James Gilmore added his name to the list of GOP White House hopefuls this week, saying the field lacks a real conservative capable of winning...

He brings to seven the number of Republicans who have said they will run or will consider running.

Heretofore the field has been dominated by three moderates: Arizona Sen. John McCain, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and outgoing Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

McCain and Giuliani have topped most polls. Both bested all top Democrats in a recent Rasmussen poll. Giuliani had the best favorability rating — 71% — vs. McCain’s 59%.

Neither McCain nor Giuliani excites GOP conservatives, who also question Romney’s conversion on abortion and gay rights...

“Probably 95%-plus of conservative decision makers, the key people in the Republican nominating process, don’t know Gilmore,” said Richard Viguerie

Brownback is counting on social conservatives. He won his seat in 1996 vowing to “reduce, reform and return” — reduce the size of government, reform Congress and return to traditional values. Limited-government conservatives say he hasn’t done much to reduce or reform. “He’s a lot like Bush,” said GOP pollster Michael McKenna. “He sees a problem and his first inclination is to toss money at it.”

Calif. Rep. Duncan Hunter, who headed the House Armed Services Committee, is a defense hawk who has differed with Bush over trade and immigration.

Winning the White House from the House of Representatives is considered a political impossibility. Few congressmen can claim a base big enough to do it

I love Rick, Newt, Rudy and there it ends. Of course, Condi would bring some WOW but doesn't seem to want to go through the pain of running and being destroyed by the Libs. The fact is the WOW is with the Rats. And I fear that WOW will brainwash the braindead to vote for her, it, him.

Jim Gilmore? The one-term Governor of a state that hasn't went D in a Presidential election since 1964 that none-the-less turned the state over to the D's upon leaving office?

No thanks.

Romney is a flip-flopper; even more liberal than Teddy Kennedy when he ran against him for the Senate. That's less important than being divorced?

Even as VA was going red in presidential races, the Democrats have had a long-time stranglehold on the Governor's mansion. The only Republicans to break it recently have been Jim Gilmore and George Allen.

As to the 'alternative issue'. I don't prostitute my self, or my vote, so the scare tactic won't work. Ergo I will not vote for a person with whom I disagree with on every issue. In addition, this nonsensical idea that "Only Rudy Can Save Us", is scary and dangerous. It's Cult Of Personality Worship, period. And the last politician who used that gambit, successfully I might add, was Adolph Hitler. And I'll be damned if I voluntarily disarm for that s.o.b. and march around saying "Hail Rudy".

Good for you. I agree completely.

I'm sick and damned tired of the conservative "base" determining the future of this party.

Too bad. Whether you like it or not, it will happen. Get used to it or quit the Republican party.

Hilary Clinton can't win the presidency... unless the Republican party nominates a liberal loser like Rudy Giuliani.

Evidently you prefer to have socialism imposed on the U.S. then. You're just helping to elect Hillary. You wouldn't happen to be on her team, would you?

What about Rick Santorum?
Many will say, "he can't win".
But, what if he did win?
We'd have a real conservative running the country and everybody would be required to attend Mass every day.
For all you Catholic bashers, I'm just kidding about the last part.

Wow isn't a word that I use for any of them - left or right.

My reactions for the current crop tend to be:
"I hope not!"
"I really hope not!"
"What a nightmare!"
"Oh No - that can't be true"
"Is this the best our country/leadership can do?"

I hear that same line virtually verbatim from everyone who believes as you do.

A real conservative can win the Presidency, that just isn't something you want to have happen, which is why you tell people that the Republican's only chance is to elect a social liberal.

That is a lie.

What do you want from a President? More war? The least popular thing people associate with the Republican party right now is Iraq, and the U.S. needs to leave the Middle East entirely ASAP.
