DUBLIN, Ireland -- Irish rocker and humanitarian Bono will become a knight of the British empire -- but the U2 frontman won't be called "Sir."
Britain confirmed Saturday Bono will receive his honorary knighthood from the British ambassador to Ireland, David Reddaway, in a Dublin ceremony shortly after New Year's Day.
The Dubliner, whose real name is Paul Hewson, won't be entitled to use the title "Sir" because he is not a national of Britain or the Commonwealth of former British colonies.
A spokesman said the 46-year-old singer was flattered by the honor and hoped it will help him open diplomatic doors in his campaign for more Western aid to Africa.
In a letter to Bono released Saturday, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the singer's lobbying had forced wealthy nations to focus on increasing aid to Africa.

Socialist anti-nuke jerk. Oh well, he's better than a lot, I just don't understand the mega-hype over their music. It's OK (playing here right now) but not awesome.
Can't stand his wailing voice either!
I recently saw this story but can't verify its accuracy:
Bono is at a U2 concert in Dublin when he asks the audience for some
quiet.
Then, in the silence, he starts to slowly clap his hands.
He says into the microphone, in a deep solemn voice...
"Just for a moment, think outside yourself... Outside this arena...
Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies."
A loud Irish voice from near the front pierces the moment...
"Well, ya stupid arse, stop yer friggin' clappin', then!"
Bono should pay his taxes first
LMAO....thanx I needed that...I luv bein' Irish! We're never lost for words.
Sorry about the kids, but the story was wonderful. LOL
EOFL!!
Yeah, I heard that a while back. still damn funny.
U2 and its lead singer Bono have been pushing the U.S. and EU countries to fork over more money for Third World nations to relieve debt and fight AIDS.
But when it comes to paying their fair share of taxes to help those efforts, U2 wants a free ride.
That's the word from Ireland, where the group has been based since it was founded in the early 1980s.
The Irish Examiner reports that U2 and Bono are furious that Ireland is doing away with its law exempting artists and authors from taxation.
Why are they furious? It means MORE WESTERN AID to Africa. Right?
What a sorry pick.
Bono rules the world ping!
A classic "shut up and sing" moment.
Just when you think his head can't get any bigger.
I think he should sell a couple of his mansions and give his own aid to Africa.
The man does not bathe regularly.
I know from first hand accounts related to his last visit to DC.
Also, he goes thru about 5 black shirts per day, changing them instead of washing his pits.
Yuck.
Oh, and his music sucks, too.
Knighthood?
For Bonzo?
Careful with that sword Bonzo; "You'll put your eye out".
How are they going to fashion a suit of armor large enough to hold this guys ego? ;)
This is so calling for a cartoon of Bono and Elton.
