:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad: Strategic Thinking Needed
-Full Story-

The United States of America has some of the smartest leaders in government, military, and business in the world. Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

Man Questioned -- Again -- For Pre-paid Cell Phones(WestVirginia)
Posted Tuesday, January 9, 2007

A Michigan man was questioned Friday during a routine traffic stop after Philippi police found 90 pre-paid, or TRAC, cellular phones in his car.

The unusual discovery prompted officers to contact federal authorities, following alerts that large quantities of the phones have been linked to terrorist activity.

At 5:08 p.m. Friday, police stopped Hashem Sayed, 24, on Route 119 near its intersection with Hackers Creek Road. According to the traffic citation, Sayed was heading north towards Grafton and was driving left of center. Barbour County Prosecutor Lynn Phillips said he had about 90 TRAC phones with him. Police questioned Sayed and the two others with him.

The police contacted federal authorities, but officers soon released Sayed. Phillips said the investigation is considered complete at the local level. Bill Crowley, an FBI spokesman, could not confirm or deny any ongoing investigation Monday.

This is not the first time Sayed, of Dearborn, Mich., has raised a red flag. In August, Grafton police pulled him over for a routine traffic stop. What they found in his car was far from routine: more than 150 TRAC phones. It may have been unusual, but not illegal. Still, the police contacted federal authorities. At the time, Sayed said he was buying them to ship to California to sell for a profit. Authorities let him go.

Cases like this have the FBI on high alert. Last February, the agency sent out a bulletin warning local law enforcement of links between the pre-paid cell phones and terrorist activity. The phones' digital frequency has been used to detonate car bombs overseas. In Marietta, Ohio, two Michigan men were found last August with a large quantity of phones. In the past year, men with large numbers of cell phones have been found across the country. Some have been arrested on terror charges.

Somali troops capture last Islamist stronghold

Jan 12, 2007 (MOGADISHU) — Ethiopian-backed government forces captured the last remaining stronghold of the Islamic movement in southern Somalia, the Somali defense minister said Friday, hours after warlords met with the president and promised to enlist their militiamen in the army.

Nigeria’s next president almost sure to be Muslim
January 12, 2007

ABUJA, Nigeria — The minarets of the national mosque and the tower of the main cathedral soar to equal heights over Nigeria’s capital, neither eclipsing the other.

Religious leaders engineered the parity of spires to promote unity amid sectarian violence unleashed at the end of military rule in 1999. Just as deliberately, after eight years of rule by an elected southern Christian, all the main political parties have nominated northern, Muslim candidates for this year’s presidential race.

Hamas Denies It Would Consider Recognizing Israel

Avi Issacharoff (Ha'aretz)

Hamas denied Wednesday that its Damascus-based political chief Khaled Mashaal said in a Reuters interview that his group would consider recognizing Israel once a Palestinian state is established. Hamas government spokesman Ghazi Hamad said Mashaal said, "Israel exists - and that's a fact." However, Hamad maintained that Mashaal did not say anything about recognizing Israel. "There was no change in our stance that Hamas does not recognize Israel," he said.

Somali Islamists held UK meeting to raise funds
Saturday January 13, 2007

According to a community leader in London, representatives of the Union of Islamic Courts, the Islamist group accused by the US of sheltering al-Qaida, visited the Finsbury Park mosque in London in November.

Somalia's Islamist movement, whose leadership is accused by the US of sheltering some of al-Qaida's most wanted operatives, sent a delegation on a fundraising trip to Britain last year, the Guardian has learned. Led by an Islamist minister, the Union of Islamic Courts delegation received pledges of funding from members of Britain's Somali diaspora at a meeting at a north London school in November.

According to one community leader, the Somali delegation also met sympathisers at the Finsbury Park mosque, which became notorious as a recruiting ground for radical Islam under its former imam Abu Hamza. Abdiwali Mohamud, a Somali community worker in Camden, said: "They were trying to influence people in a Muslim way, saying are you with us or with the unbelievers?"

TV investigation finds hate DVDs at mosque

LONDON, Jan. 12 -- DVDs on sale at a large London mosque promote hatred of Jews and accuse western doctors of spreading AIDS in Africa, a TV investigation reported. "Undercover Mosques" is to be shown Monday on "Dispatches," a series on Britain's Channel 4. Reporters spent a year on the investigation.

Channel 4 will report that the London Central Mosque sells DVDs showing speeches by two extremist clerics, Sheikh Feiz and Sheikh Khalid Yasin. The clerics predict that Jews will be exterminated on the Day of Judgment, advocate a subordinate role for women and say Christian missionaries spread AIDS by putting the virus in vaccines for tropical diseases like malaria and yellow fever.

Hafiz Waheed, manager of the shop at the London Central Mosque, told the European Jewish Press there were only 10 copies of the DVDs among hundreds of other titles, and they appear to have sold out. He said his staff is going through the stock to remove any DVDs that preach hate.

Insurgents Killed in Afghan Fighting Reportedly Are Sent Back to Pakistan
Saturday, January 13, 2007

KABUL, Jan. 12 -- The bodies of two dozen Islamic insurgents killed in a clash with NATO and Afghan army forces near the border with Pakistan were sent back Friday to Pakistan, where Taliban leaders asked that they be given funerals as "martyrs," according to news reports here.

The reports appeared to bolster Afghan and U.S. assertions, repeatedly denied by Pakistani officials, that Pakistan's tribal regions along the border with Afghanistan have provided a haven for Islamic militia groups seeking to destabilize the Western-backed government of Afghanistan.

JMB cadre held with bomb-making materials (Bangladesh)
Sat. January 13, 2007

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a cadre of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) with bomb-making materials and cartridges at Karatia Bazar in Sadar upazila yesterday. The arrestee was identified as Arman, 25, son of Liakat Khan of Hilara Adabari village under Mirzapur upazila.

On confessional statements of two arrested JMB cadres--Hassan alias Hridoy and Shoyeb alias Zahir--a special team of Rab-12, led by company commander Major Kazi Anis Morshed, raided the rented house of JMB cadre Selim Miah alias Babu at the Bazar yesterday morning and arrested Arman from there.

Hassan and Shoyeb were arrested with a huge amount of explosives and bomb making materials in Badda area of the capital early Wednesday.

The bomb making materials and other items seized from Tangail include 500 grams of zinc oxide, 100 grams of carbon powder, 800 grams of lead nitrate, eight plastic boxes, some masks, 16 plastic circuit boards, three cartridges, 11 negatives of films, 53 audio cassettes and one mobile phone set.

The JMB cadre Selim Miah alias Babu, who rented the house at Karatia Bazar, however managed to escape arrest, Rab sources said. Rab filed two separate cases against the arrested JMB cadre Arman with Tangail Sadar Police Station. Abdur Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tangail Sadar Police Station, said they will produce the arrested JMB cadre Arman in the court today, seeking remand.
