Gas Smelled Over Large Area Of Manhattan

YORK -- People all over a large part of New York City are smelling a gas, and it's not clear where it's coming from.

Numerous people have called 911 concerned about the odor. Con Edison, the Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating.

PATH service has been suspended into the 33rd Street station. Service is still going into the World Trade Center station.

Macy's department store has been evacuated, according to reports.

There also are unconfirmed reports of a similar smell across the river in New Jersey.

People between Midtown and Battery Park are reported to be smelling it. At NBC headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza, the odor is very strong. One person who works on the sixth floor at 30 Rockefeller Center says it's so strong people are leaving the building.

At one major office building at 37th and 7th, employees have been told that Con Edison is looking into a smell, and they should remain inside until they hear otherwise.

Mayor Bloomberg is expected to be asked about it at a 9:30 briefing with the media.

She who smelt it, dealt it.

She who denied it, supplied it.

I wonder if this is at all related to reports of a strong "maple syrup" smell from several months ago? Its almost as though a distribution system were being tested.

Yeah, aromatics are trucked in tankers, just as gasoline is. It is added before the gas goes into the distribution lines.

It is common to have a release, especially with all the temperature changes.

Natural gas has absolutely no smell, otherwise. A strong smell indicates that it is not likely gas, but the aromatics that have been released, and it is not dangerous. It just stinks.

Happens all the time in Louisiana where I worked in the oil patch for years.

Natural gas is lighter than air. Propane is heavier than air.

FOX is speculating now about terrorism

That's nothing new. A dog could fart in Wyoming and Faux News would speculate about terrorism and the dog may really be a terrorist in disguise trying to get to a large city..

It's more likely that it is some sort of natural gas leak

She who smelt it, dealt it.
She who denied it, supplied it.

He who refused it, diffused it.

BTW, no smell at Grand Central 1/2 hour ago, no smell on the 4 line south, and no smell down here at the tip of Manhattan on Broad St. south of Wall Street.

Now THAT's unusual.

Yeah, but making multiple gas leaks and then dropping a lighted match would be quite a clever way to 'bomb' NYC.

Does every thread have to instantly degenerate into some sort of open mic night at the local dive bar? Not every story is an opportunity to crack open the lame joke book you got for Christmas, folks.

Seems that way. I sometimes wish we had an "ignore user" on the board.
