Bush adding 21,500 troops to Iraq force - LIVE thread- speech 9pm EST

Unswayed by anti-war passions, President Bush will send 21,500 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and build the American presence there toward its highest level to quell worsening bloodshed. The move puts Bush on a collision course with the new Democratic Congress and runs counter to advice from some senior generals.

Set to announce his decisions in a prime-time speech Wednesday night, Bush was to acknowledge making major mistakes in Iraq, primarily failing to deploy enough U.S. soldiers and demand more Iraqi troops and cooperation to confront the country's near-anarchy.

In advance of Bush's address, White House counselor Dan Bartlett said U.S. military operations have been "handcuffed by political interference by Iraqi leadership" — but now will proceed under rules allowing troops to confront Shiite militias as well as Sunni insurgents.

(snip)

The new Democratic leaders of Congress met with Bush and complained afterward that their opposition to a buildup had been ignored. "This is the third time we are going down this path. Two times this has not worked," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Why are they doing this now? That question remains."

Senate and House Democrats are arranging votes urging the president not to send more troops. While lacking the force of law, the measures would compel Republicans to go on record as either bucking the president or supporting an escalation.

"If not for the Iraq war, why did we lose the Senate and the House"

We lost simply because too many became disenchanted, and stayed home Nov 7th. Between the spending like drunken sailors, the complete refusal to handle the Mexican invasion, the constant drum-beat of negativity from the media, its no wonder enough voters were convinced to stay home.

The left wants to make Iraq the reason for the Reps losses last fall, but I am not buying!

McCain is not a strong Republican in relation to everything else in relation to what this forum wants. then I am sorry to say that McCain is a RINO.

RINOs give Elephants a bad name.

I don't like some of the things McCain had said. I would have taken a fellow Republican behind closed doors and told him what I thought. I would not give the LSM ammo for anyone in my Party.

I was just interested in what the people of Arizona want?

Do the words of McCain represent the people of Arizona well?

And the fact that mistakes were made somehow equates to Iraq being a total failure?

You know you really shouldn't post when you're drunk.

EVERY WAR we have ever faught has not gone according to plan. Commanders have gotten fired...soldiers have gotten killed that shouldn't have. Plans have been revised...then revised again.

This war is no different. What would have me worried is if we weren't adjusting tactics and staying static in how we are trying to handle the situation.

You seem to think that wars are fought in a vaccum.

It's not a zero sum game.

we probably have the most ignorant electorate in the history of this country.
We do for sure and thats why I think we're doomed. The MSM and MTV run the show these days .The Islamics know it and will walk all ove rus at some point. They manipulate the media and use our own liberty against us. Their population is swelling like crazy here and the liberals don't have the common sense to see whats happening around them . I give the US 6 to 8 years myself..I'll go down fighting though.

I remember those words well, totalchaos. "You're either with us or against us". I applauded those words and again today.

Democrats and Liberals refuse to believe what is at stake. I think some of them do know, but are so politically motivated that they refuse to do what needs to be done.

God save us from our enemies. Both those without and those within. Our troops need our support and prayers. They are our heros and they know how important their missions are.

And 30,000 troops died in Korea during 2 1/2 years while Truman was president. That's 10 times as many as have died in Iraq under Bush. 34,000 Americans gave their lives for Korean freedom.

So do you think Iraqis will ultimately be more or less viciously anti-American than the South Koreans are today? Or will they be staunch allies like the French, whose freedom was also purchased with American blood?

Great homepage you have, by the way.

Yours is ten times better. Loved the Toby Keith video.

BTW, I'm in Texas.

I didn't get the sense that the majority of the South Koreans were anti-American in the year I was there.

it's the same now as it was in the 80's when I was a kid...it's the students...fueled by infiltrators from the north that state the protests.

Once they get older they seem to grow out of their anti-American phase.

And the ones that were around during that time still have a deep respect for the U.S.

The bottom line, as far as I'm concerned, must be that those Republicans and "Independents", Freepers included, must be, in fact, paying a whole lot more attention to the likes of the New York Times than they will ever admit.

In fact the President said that we are going to interrupt and stop the supplies of weapons to the terrorists coming from Iran and Syria and that is excellent news.

BTW, not a word from Blair which proves my point from way back when. Bush lead, Blair followed and now he has been beaten down by the left.
