Nuclear Blast on TV's '24' Causes Fallout for Fox (PC crybaby alert)
ABC News ^ | 1/15/07

"How much longer? I hear someone," says the nervous terrorist with a heavy Middle Eastern accent, just before U.S. agents storm a warehouse where a nuclear device is being assembled. Confusion reigns, drama builds, the device is detonated and a mushroom cloud looms over Los Angeles. Such is primetime television in the age of terrorism, or as some critics charge, has "24" gone too far?

"It's the closest television comes to roller coasters," said David Bianculli, television critic for the New York Daily News. "It works well dramatically, and as far as feeding fears, that's what '24' is all about."

Sut Jhally, co-producer and co-director of the film "Hijacking Catastrophe," says the dramatic action in the show creates a dangerous climate in which the public loses some of its perspective on what's real and what's not. Of course that may be a minority opinion given the show's enormous popularity.

No, Curtis IS dead. He got shot in the neck. And, he was only listed as a guest star this season, whereas last year, he was a full cast member.

( LOL. And the writer complains that the show is propoganda and is not surprised it's on Fox. Surprisingly enough though, the reporter contradicts himself and details how ABC and some other networks showed movies which feature nuclear bombs. Of course, those weren't propoganda, just entertainment, something Hollyweird can't admit about "24". )

AIM: Congressional Liberals Bare Plan to Muzzle Conservative Speech
U.S. Newswire on Yahoo
1/15/07 / AIM

WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Less than two weeks after Democrats took control of both houses of Congress, Accuracy in Media has exposed a plan by congressional liberals to use the federal government to silence conservative voices in the media.

Reporting from a so-called National Conference on Media Reform, organized by "progressive" activists, AIM editor Cliff Kincaid has revealed, in an exclusive report now available on the AIM web site (http://www.aim.org), that liberals in the House and Senate intend to push legislation giving the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the authority to monitor and restrict what conservatives in the media say and how they say it.

Kincaid quotes Democratic Rep. Maurice Hinchey (news, bio, voting record) (D-N.Y.) as saying that he wants to put an end to the influence of conservative media personalities he finds to be "neo-fascist" and "neo-con." Their legislative vehicle is revival of a "fairness doctrine" giving FCC bureaucrats the ability to grant liberal activists "equal access" to conservative programs on radio and television. Senator Bernie Sanders, an avowed socialist, told the conference he would push such a measure in the Senate.

Kincaid calls the approach "authoritarian" and a threat to freedom of speech in the U.S.

In his Special Report on the conference, which featured Bill Moyers and Jesse Jackson and Hollywood celebrities such as Jane Fonda, Kincaid said that the event "turned out to be an effort to push the Democratic Party further to the left and get more 'progressive' voices in the media, while proposing to use the power of the federal government to silence conservatives."

At the same time, Kincaid noted that one conference speaker, freshman Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), pledged to protect or even increase taxpayer funding for public broadcasting that he admits is on the "left hand side of the dial."

Kincaid documents funding for the organizers of the conference from George Soros, who has made billions of dollars from secretive financial transactions, and notes evidence that participants were so far to the left that Senator Hillary Clinton was considered by them to be "too conservative." Kincaid also documents the active involvement in the conference by members of the Revolutionary Communist Party.

Accuracy in Media (AIM), founded in 1969, is America's oldest media watchdog organization. For more information, please visit http://www.aim.org.

Wasn't it ABC who gave us "The Morning After" about a Soviet strike all across the USA? That was over 10 years ago.

I love it how her boyfriend (who also works there) wanted to saty locked up to get information about the baddies being held. He was an example of a good and loyal immigrant!

How Fox is turning everything upside down is fantastic. The trusted neighbor and friend is a terrorist. The supposed CAIR villain does the right thing and tells his lawyer to shut up. Great TV.

If you want to see some real edgy stuff WRT the choices we have to make to stop terrorism, go back and look at the previous series these guys did: "La Femme Nikita".

Having a black president is a clever and subtle way of saying he's a Democrat without actually saying it. A nice touch, IMO.

So the party of free speech is going to try and shut down the conservative portion of talk radio and television. And a sleeping public won't understand the hypocrisy.

They do get killed but Curtis was a guy who would get missions done in spite of difficulties. To have him revert to a personal beef when there was a nuke in play made no sense in so far as his character. Out of respect to his character I thought he should have died in the field or even trying to stop the nuke. Jack could have been sprurred to get back in the game 100% losing a comrade instead of having to kill him himself.

I understand what they were trying to do but there was a better way to do it.

Good point. I am still thankful Gore lost that election. Just hope that 2008 doesn't bring us Hillary or Barak!

I remember the furor over ABC (IIRC) showing "the Day After" about the midwesst after being devastated by nuclear bombs. Everybody was upset - can't show the consequences of losing the cold war, can we?

And how the star of "Amerika", Kris Kristofeson (or however you spell it) went to Moscow to protest the showing of that mimiseries - although I'm sure he was handsomely paid to be it's star. Can't show scenarions of a Russian takeover either.

in both cases, the left was beside itself.

No, Arabs reinforce stereotypes about Arabs.

In some instances perhaps. But shows like 24 reinforce them. I watched the past two nights as I had never seen the show. Pure drivel, fearmongering crap. Arabs are out to get you, suitcase nukes in every city, blah, blah, blah..That show's been on for six series? I'm going to start a TV station tomorrow that shows only paint drying. It would be more informative and entertaining than that.

"It's the closest television comes to roller coasters," said David Bianculli, television critic for the New York Daily News. "It works well dramatically, and as far as feeding fears, that's what '24' is all about."

About says it all. In today's feelings environment, the only thing that gets on TV these days are based mainly on emotions and less on rational thought. 24 sure as hell does that. And it's not even entertaining.

Flame away.

Nieson ratings are a joke. If the ratings were actually based on what the majority of people were watching(as in being able to tell which cable channel a user is watching in every household), then I might put more stock in them.

But Nielson chooses people at random and gives them a device that records what they watch for about 2-6 months. The total amount of people is around .00000000001 percent of the US population.

So the odds of getting a really good idea of what people watch are virtually nill. But at least Nielson can claim they are right and rake in the moola.
