Nuclear Blast on TV's '24' Causes Fallout for Fox (PC crybaby alert)
ABC News ^ | 1/15/07

"How much longer? I hear someone," says the nervous terrorist with a heavy Middle Eastern accent, just before U.S. agents storm a warehouse where a nuclear device is being assembled. Confusion reigns, drama builds, the device is detonated and a mushroom cloud looms over Los Angeles. Such is primetime television in the age of terrorism, or as some critics charge, has "24" gone too far?

"It's the closest television comes to roller coasters," said David Bianculli, television critic for the New York Daily News. "It works well dramatically, and as far as feeding fears, that's what '24' is all about."

Sut Jhally, co-producer and co-director of the film "Hijacking Catastrophe," says the dramatic action in the show creates a dangerous climate in which the public loses some of its perspective on what's real and what's not. Of course that may be a minority opinion given the show's enormous popularity.

you clearly haven't watched the show. 24 isn't "leftist".

I need to start watching this show.

Perhaps not, unless you look at comic books as literature.

Last year, about a third of the way into the reruns, my husband and I got hooked. The only reason I wanted to see it was because I happened to catch a little bit of Rush one day as he was going on about it. When he talked about how non-PC it was in terms of who the terrorists really are that captured my attention.

There were so many ridiculous twists and turns that lured us on, so we hung in there. But the show became more and more ridiculous, e.g., Bauer is apparently the only person who can correctly pursue the enemy. Pehaps that is because he obviously never needs to sleep, eat, or use the restroom. And, despite the fact that they are huddled around comms equipment for 24 hours each day, the people at CTU never even have a hair out of place or appear to be suffering from any effects of non-showering.

What really bugged me, based on the alleged non-PC premise, is that the guy who seems to be ultimately pulling the strings as he is seen on the phone several times giving the president orders appears to be a very WASPish-looking American sitting in some executive suite. I may be wrong about this part of the plot, as I did not watch the whole series.

I admit that last night (Monday) we watched the whole 2 hours of the second installment. I was curious to see if things had changed for the better. The only improvement that I could detect was that Jack actually had a genuine human moment; he threw up after shooting Curtis. And the poor quality of acting on the part of the president's sister should have been a source of embarrassment to the director.

We won't be watching again, but I have to admit that I want to know that Curtis did not die. He was one of the few genuine characters on the show, IMO, and the guy portraying him is an excellent actor. (I also liked the guy who was the first lady's bodyguard last season.)

FOX has an agenda... one guiding principle, make money. FOX would give us 24 hours of nothing but The 3 Stooges if it would boost ratings. FOX has decided having a conservative lean will get them the most viewers. They're right.

Bingo!

Do you realize that ALL the bad guys are Republicans

The perceptions of some are bad, not all the players. Many of them turn out to be hero's!

I think you will find the political bent of the show to reflect todays reality, which is one of the reasons the show is so successful.

In reality, Republicans are perceived as war mongering sluts, and this comes through from time to time on the show, but just like reality, in the end the perception is found to be false.

A little something for everyone, I suspect....But reality is hard to argue with.

I thought Curtis was shot in the throat, just below the adam's apple.

I don't think the show is liberal at all. I think the program is giving a conservative argument on appeasement being a danger to the country. It would be liberal if they showed how appeasing terrorist's demands helped, but its not the case here.

Dear Bigg Red,

"We won't be watching again, but I have to admit that I want to know that Curtis did not die."

Sorry, it appears that Curtis died.

He is now listed as "deceased" on the 24 website.

Jack is a bit of a superhero when you think about it with his own flaws. Of course they are using a lot of literary flair to do what they do but it is supposed to be a high energy show. That was the twist, a show where a guy has 24 hours to save the world.

I don't think it's moved left at all. The writing is subtle, but very appropriate.

BTW there is a poll about this at the link... so far the pro-24-side is winning.

He's the first President Palmer's brother. If I remember two seasons ago he was the one who broke a lot of "rules" without President Palmer's permission... now I see they have a sister working for CAIR.

Good. You are right about the ex?spy. I'm not sure his kids are really his kids. I remember on a previous show him breifing "his" kids on what to say if anyone asks about thier family.

I don't think he is working with the attackers, but it sure looks like he knew it was coming.
