President Bush embraces Marine Lance Cpl. Chad Watson of Mt. Zion, Ill., who lost his lower right leg in Iraq , during a ceremony honoring the 2006 World Series Champions St. Louis Cardinals , Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 in the East Room of the White House in Washington. Bush, who presented Watson, a Cardinals fan, with a Purple Heart at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, made good on a promise to bring him to the White House for the East Room ceremony.

I had the honor and privilege to finally meet Chad Friday night. I had met his mom and sister several weeks ago when they first arrived at Walter Reed.

Chad is breaking all records with his physical therapy and healing process. He was awaiting the arrival of his girlfriend (a real beauty, I might add) and was doing wheelies in his wheelchair as he stared at the door.

Chad was so excited to have the opportunity to see the President again. He could hardly believe that President Bush would remember the promise he made to Chad a couple of weeks ago.

His mom was in a panic over what to wear. When she packed to come to DC, she was not thinking about clothing. They were all very excited to be at the White House with the President

Vice President's Remarks at the Naming Ceremony of the USS Gerald R. Ford

I've been looking forward to this gathering of friends and colleagues, and President Bush asked me to come this morning and extend his good wishes to everybody, as well.

If the purpose of naming an aircraft carrier is to convey the confident spirit of our military, and the good and just causes that America serves in the world, then we have certainly accomplished that purpose here today. The name Gerald R. Ford belonged to a man who gave a lifetime of devoted service to our country, reflecting honor on the United States Navy, on the House of Representatives, on the Vice Presidency, and on the Presidency. The naming of a carrier is a fitting tribute to the man, and it's thrilling for all of his family and friends.

Chad Watson is from my little town....He is a couple of years yonger than Jonathan but both went to school together...Chad was a big football star here while in HS.....I remember him playing baseball when he was just a little kid....it was in the local paper here when he lost his leg and I sent it to Jon and I must send him this also.
