A petition drive to get Confederate-themed clothing banned from school grounds has exposed a rift at Hollywood Hills High. The episode may lead the Broward School Board to examine whether its student conduct code should address the Confederate flag.
Sophomore Ilana Hostyk started a petition this week at Hollywood Hills in hopes of pressing officials to ban the symbol, considered a show of Rebel pride by some and a reminder of Southern race-based prejudice by others.
"My whole goal is to ban the Confederate flag from Broward schools," said Hostyk, 15. "People are really offended by it."
Hostyk, who is Jewish, said student display of the flag on campus has caused tension between white, black and Jewish students. About 2,200 students are enrolled at Hollywood Hills. About 41 percent are white, 20 percent black and 35 percent Hispanic, according to district records.

It saddens me to say this but over 120,000 Union Soldiers and over 95,000 Confederate Soldiers died in vain. Not because the Confederacy failed or the Union was preserved. Not because of slavery. But because 150 years later a high school student and the Broward County School board seem to have no idea why the war was fought to begin with, and what those men died for.
I'd tell them the war was not about racisim, but whats the point?

If they truly are interested in banning all clothing that is divisive they need to mandate and institute uniforms. Of course, the real purpose is to eliminate everything traditional or conservative in nature.
It doesn't matter. They have all decided the south was racist and the war was predicated on that. They are not going to let actual history get into the way of their misconceptions.
Hostyk, 15 probably has never had a history class in school.
As a Southerner and a product of our public school system, I guarantee she has. It took getting out of school and a lot of individual research to figure out that everything that is taught about American History (then and today) either ignores the truth or downright misrepresents it. Due to my own experience, I am seriously considering home schooling.
Well as a Southerner I'm offended by the union flag. Take it down.

Poor girl doesn't even know her own heritage. Else she wouldn't be bad mouthing the Flag.
Hostyk said she became interested in the Confederate flag last year. She said she found it curious that it was allowed on campus. After she began circulating the petition, she quickly learned that many students wanted to sign.
But yet she couldn't bother to do some research on Southern Confederate Jews or Judah Benjamin. About describes today's culture. Go for the superficial, accept that as the truth, and move on.

really. i'm with ya there. heard some funny commentary from Jackie Mason about how the hollywood elite are always talkin' about how they're so environmentally concious and aware and want to protect it, yadda, yadda, but he said they destroy everywhere they go; they do it so they can make their movies; cut down trees and vegetation; blow up things and put pollution into the atmosphere. Why doesn't Gore go after them; THEY are the REAL inconvenient truth, ya know?

Initially the war was fought to preserve the Union, then Lincoln included freeing the slaves. Today, I reckon this would be called mission creep.
