They say it was a "sword that's several feet in length. Something you'd probably see in an ancient knight type movie or something like that. " according to the stories
here Of course if somebody is coming at you with a sword he is immediately seven feet tall and the sword ten feet long. Later you are surprised by how they shrunk. :)
Still even if it was a three foot with a bit of an edge you could still do a lot of damage if you had the element of surprise on your side.

Thanks HTB, I am most interested in this story from a motive and forensic point of view. There is an international student in the mix of this story. I would like to know his name, where he was from, and the role he played in this family.
But I rarely get news sources from out West and will have to rely on foolow up postings to this article.
There is a lot more to this case. 14 years olds do not usually kill their mothers unless they are being forced to keep a secret. I would like to find out what that secret was. Something is strange about this case , 14 year old boys don't just up and kill their moms.

The sister was 14 the boy was 16 although I take your point. (no pun intended) I don't think we should leap to the conclusion that the foreign exchange student was male either. Considering that the majority of the residents of the house were female it is more likely to have been a female.
It seemed the dad lived elsewhere. Family troubles maybe? They all have the same last name but some women keep their ex's last names to prevent any more disturbance to the children. Of course sometimes they do it because they hated their maiden name as well. :)
If you come across anything else ping me and I will do the same for you. It is an interesting case that is for sure.
