Anti-war protesters were allowed to spray paint on part of the west front steps of the United States Capitol building after police were ordered to break their security line by their leadership, two sources told The Hill.
According to the sources, police officers were livid when they were told to fall back by U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Phillip Morse and Deputy Chief Daniel Nichols. "They were the commanders on the scene," one source said, who requested anonymity. "It was disgusting."
After police ceded the stairs, located on the lower west front of the Capitol, the building was locked down, the source added.
A second source who witnessed the incident said that the police had the crowd stopped at Third Street, but were told to bring the police line in front of the Capitol.
Approximately 300 protesters were allowed to take the steps and began to spray paint "anarchist symbols" and phrase such as "Our capitol building" and "you cant stop us" around the area, thesource said.
Morse responded to these claims in an e-mail Sunday afternoon, explaining that the protesters were seeking confrontation with the police.
"While there were minor instances of spray painting of pavement by a splinter group of Anarchists who were seeking a confrontation with the police, their attempts to breach into secure areas and rush thedoors of the Capitol were thwarted," Morse said. "The graffiti was easily removed by the dedicated [Architect of the Capitol] staff, some of whom responded on their day off to quickly clean the area."
He added, "It is the USCP's duty and responsibility to protect the Capitol complex, staff and public while allowing the public to exercisetheir First Amendment rights at the end of the day, both occurredwithout injury to protestors or officers."
Yet, the sources who talked to The Hill were furious thatprotesters were not stopped before reaching the Capitol.
"To get that close to the Capitol building, that is ridiculous," the second source said. "[Police] were told not to arrestanyone."
The second source added that police had to stand by and watch asprotesters posed in front of their graffiti.
Tens of thousands of people rallied on the Mall and the Capitol complex Saturday in protest of the increased troop deployments and the war in Iraq.
Just leave the paint. With the Dems in charge, the Capitol should look like it's been done by a grafitti artist.
The Capitol Police should have dropped every one of them. Disgusting.
I agree. What better ad for a Demo-controlled Congress than graffiti.
Let thousands of tourists per day get an accurate mental image of the place.
This enrages me. These chumps should have been beaten severely.
Seen any pictures?
"...should have dropped every one of them."
"...should have dropped every one of them."
"
...should have dropped every one of them."
"...should have dropped every one of them."
Are you listening to what you are saying?
"...should have dropped every one of them."
Anarchists, great.... violent self centered pukes with no money or property. I've met a few of this type in my past. I have the same opinion of anarchists as South Park's Cartman has of hippies. They are vermin.
I never knew before that there was a first Amendment right to vandalise the Capitol Building.
The vandalisers should be ashamed of themselves. The Capitol Police Commander should be ashamed for allowing it.
Altogether this whole day in Washington was a shameful day.
If the crowd wanted a Confrontation they should ahve gotten it. This is the problem with letting demonstrators off with a fine. It has always been that way, They demonstrate they get arrested they get a light fine. Imprisonment for a year would make for some peaceful demonstrations.
Headline is incorrect.
These protesters are not anti-war. They are anti-America.
Yes.
The most ironic thing about these mental midgets is they want to claim "this is our Capitol". Anarchists are against any form of government so why would they claim it is theirs? Morons.
See #5 They crossed the line from legitimate protest to breaking the law. And the Capitol Building no less.
Vietnam all over again!
This isn't some banana republic where it's expected that the national legislature will be seized from time to time by bandanaed communists.
MacArthur put a stop to that "Bonus Army" garbage for that very reason - the rule of law is paramount and anyone who does not accept that fact is begging to be ventilated.
Still too rough? Well, then try them , and if convicted cane them in public, preferably on a college campus so the message gets through. Then make them take an English course at their expense so they can learn to express themselves with a pen on their own piece of paper instead of with a can of spray paint on property they do not exclusively own.
