(Vanity) Do your school close on account of cold?

Posted on 02/05/2007 5:14:52 AM PST by yankeedame

I'm here in the Dayton, OH area. We are going through a blast of "dangerous" cold. Today 8 degree expected high, with wind chill of -10 to -15. Otherwise sunny.

I've got the radio on and I'm stunned the number of school closings! (Not to mention the slightly smaller number of "2 hour delays".)

Do you folks have this no-school-today-because-its-too-cold?

We had -4 overnight with the wind hitting over 30. That's about -30 chill. Most schools closed. I was surprised. Right now it's nicer with -1 and 15-20 winds for a chill of around -20. I just went out to move my car. I like to do that with no coat just to get my blood moving. Felt great.

First time schools were ever closed in N. Ohio for cold I think was in 94. Two days. It was around -20 with 30 winds for a chill of -50. That was brisk.

I swear the wind chill charts are baloney. When I was in high school, I was waiting for the bus with no hat or gloves. It was dead calm. When I got home, I found it had been -15 and I didn't believe it.

It was actuallt -4F in Dayton, Ohio this morning with a high predicted of +8F. Tonight it will again get down to -4F. This does not take into account that the low lying rural areas have gone as low as -11F. Tuesday should be interesting as we get 2-4 inches of dry wind blown snow.

That's because you're in Ohio.

Up here in northeast Illinois we still have school even when it gets down to -10 (like today).

The schools here close if we get a lot of snow and the plows can't kkep up with it.

North of us I don't think they ever close their schools. They send out snowmobiles instead of school buses. Heehee...

"So what time is the Colt's parade today?"

According to WIBC it starts at 4 PM from West St & Maryland St in downtown Indy.

Colts players will be in busses, too bad I would like to see them ride on a fire engine or something where they can be seen.

Here in San Antonio Texas we had some ice so everything closed down till it got back to around the low 60s and lots of sunshine, about 2 days not more than 3. That's it for our snow or ice till next year.

When my kids were little, in the hopes that it would bring on snow day, they'd wear their pajamas inside out, kind of like a rally cap in baseball!

My kids do this as well (Cleveland, OH). They also flush an ice cube down the toilet before bed.

We have friends stationed at Eielson AFB, on the cold side of Fairbanks.

NO bus service on base, kids walk or parents take em.

Think about it - it gets -40 for days on end. No wimps here.

Yes, they wear snowmachine outfits....

Not really, we ALWAYS have humidity, which means we always have ice when it freezes.

People down here don't deal with ice very well. ;)

our schools close when it rains too hard

Sometimes it goes so long between rains, they let school out so the kids can see what it looks like.

Yesterday I saw three brass monkeys down on their hands and knees alongside the road. They were looking for something.

LOL! These are the things that we all remember and I hope our kids pass these rituals on to their kids. I used to love snow days! BTW, my wife is from Akron and all of her family still lives there. We pass through Cleveland while going to Akron and often do things in Cleveland. We love the zoo and an Indians game at Jacob Field is something special! I'm hoping my sons band gets to play the RR Hall of Fame sometime. Cleveland Rocks!!!

Our schools have closed a couple of times, but not because of cold. Buses run, lights come on, 60 below.

In my school district, they rarely close for anything. I remember one year a school bus got stuck in the snow across the street...told my daughter "Guess what? You're getting a snow day today!" I drive her to school now, but I'll keep her home if it's greater than 30 below (I'm in MN, so it happens) just because I never know if my car will start or not.

I loved snow days when I was a kid. If the schools don't close I give her at least 2 snow or cold days myself.

Uh, up here in northeast Ohio it gets cold and snows, too. More than any part of Illinois. Average snowfall in Cuyahoga county (Cleveland) runs from 40 in the far west to 60 inches downtown to 80 farther east. Over 100 inches average next county over. Last year we had 101 inches on the west side (much more to the east). Then there is Erie, PA that averages about 150.

This is the second time (first was -50 winchill for 2 days around 1995) in my life schools here have been closed due to cold. I don't really know why, but once the avalanche of closings started, everyone got carried away with it.

They closed school here today(SE Wisconsin). In our ridiculous town, if you live within city limits, you do not ride the bus unless you pay an exorbitant amount. So, there are some kids who walk literally miles to school. They are talking about being closed tomorrow too.
