Pentagon Rejects Speaker Pelosi's Request for Military Aircraft
ABC News ^ | Feb. 7, 2007 | Jake Tapper

Posted on 02/07/2007 5:42:02 PM PST by Hadean

A source close to the controversy over the request made by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for use of a military plane that can fly to and from her home district in San Francisco, Calif., without having to stop to refuel, tells ABC News that the Pentagon has rebuffed Pelosi's request.

The source says that Pentagon officials and the Bush administration have instead offered Pelosi use of the same plane made available to former Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois: a C-20, which seats about 12 passengers and five crew members.

A C-20 can make the 700-mile flight to Hastert's Aurora, Ill., district easily but would generally have to stop to refuel to complete the 2,800-mile trip from Washington D.C. to the San Francisco Bay Area, depending on the headwinds.

Pelosi has expressed concern about having to stop and refuel, primarily for security reasons, her office says. Since 9/11, the Speaker of the House — second in line behind the Vice President in the line of presidential succession — has been able to use a military plane for travel, for security reasons.

In response to the Pentagon offer, Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly tells ABC News, "We appreciate the Defense Department's continuing concern for the Speaker's security. We are reviewing their letter."

Here's the list -- pre-election 2006:

These members of the United States House of Representatives also belong to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The DSA is a confederation of socialists formed in 1983 when a splinter group of the Socialist Party (Michael Harrington's Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee, DSOC) merged with the SDS splinter New American Movement (NAM).

The DSA has many celebrity members, including feminist Gloria Steinem, actor Ed Asner, black activist Cornel West, and libertarian socialist Noam Chomsky. It is also the chief American member group of the Socialist International, which includes the British Labour Party and the French Parti Socialiste.

The main aim of DSA was to convert the Democratic Party into a socialist-democratic organization.

For more information about the DSA, you can go to their web site at http://www.dsausa.org.

At one time, the following list could be located on the DSA web site.  Once this list was made public, The DSA removed the link.  These congress critters don't want you to know their true colors (red).

When you are President of the United States, you are entitled to Air Force One.

Not only is it appropriate for Official Business, the aircraft is a symbol of our nation, Aermica's might, our Presidency, and our foreign policy.

The 89th Airlift Wing supports over Distinguished Visitors in a variety of super aircraft.

I flew DV airlift in the C-21 in Europe, which is small LearJet 35. I had Senators, Congressman, Admirals, Generals, etc as passengers. Most of them were wonderful people.

There is an Aircraft (the C-32) that Pelosi coveted. It is in the inventory to support a large contingent of DVs, their staff, and the press on official travel (as is Air Force One and AF 2).

This is the aircraft she lusted after.

What the Pentagon told the Washington Times was that Pelosi wanted exclusive rights and priviledges to this aircraft - essentially taking it out of the inventory for her use, her staff, and her family.

That is unprecendented and violates many regulations and policy statutes.

It was a selfish and power mad move. She tried to itimidate the White House and the Defense Dept into giving her the aircraft one Congressman dubbed Pelois One.

I expect she will go ballistic over this. She wants to be Queen.

I think ABC is confused about the capabilities of the C20 plane that is the standard government executive jet.

Gulfstream III can easily get to California non-stop

Range: C-20A/B, 4,250 miles (3,698 nautical miles) long-range; C-20H, 4,850 miles (4,220 nautical miles) long range
Ceiling: 45,000 feet (13,716 meters)
Load: 12 passengers

Just yesterday I was wondering what your comments about this would be, and this morning I find them. Thanks for adding to the discussion. I will use your point when I call my local talk show today.

I am also going to add that now would be a good time for an enterprising reporter to enlighten 'the American public' on the actual travel of all of our esteemed gentlemen and ladies who spend a few days a week in DC. And an expose of the number of staff each congresscritter has is long overdue. They really do think they are kings and queens.

Especially the ones who travel through DC with police escort - lights and sirens operating.

Actually, the Constitution says Congress by law is to designate which "officer", meaning "official", is to become President if the presidency and the vice presidency are vacant. It used to be the President Pro Tem of the Senate and now it is the Speaker of the House. No need or reason for the SCOTUS to get involved.

Yes, that's mostly true, except that the primary backups are 757s (I've had a tour of one of them). I was of course referring to the primary pair of aircraft used as Presidential transport.

Ya know, when a regular Joe takes a job far from home, he has to relocate. He wouldn't dream of commuting by private plane.

Besides, wouldn't that lead to global warming?

This is the problem. Congressmen have to 'live' in their districts. One of the beefs used against Senator Santorum during the last election campaign was that his family lived and children attended school in Virginia. So he was castigated for not leaving his family in Pennsylvania, and commuting to Pa every weekend.

I hope you quit being in lurker status soon. You always have pertinent information, like you provided here, and I learn something almost every time you post.

I see that Lauer on the Today show along with David Gregory were on the air this morning discussing this, and in essence told her to give it up, as it is becoming a PR nightmare.
