Move to Dump Electoral College Defeated in Montana, North Dakota

A movement to essentially dump the Electoral College and give the presidency to the winner of the nationwide popular vote has been defeated in North Dakota and Montana, after opponents said it would eliminate any influence states may have in presidential contests.

Thursday's votes represented the first legislative setbacks this year for the National Popular Vote plan, said spokeswoman Breeanna Mierop. It is a proposed agreement among states to cast their electoral votes for the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote.

"If you look at the population trends ... if this were to become the law, our presidential elections would be controlled by the vote in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston," said North Dakota state Rep. Lawrence Klemin, a Bismarck Republican. "They would decide who the president was, not the rest of us."

North Dakota's House voted 60-31 Thursday to defeat the plan. In the Montana Senate, it lost 30-20.

Glad to see it lost. It sounds like a thinly veiled attempt to win the presidency back through underhanded means.

Trends? what do trends have to do with it those are exactly the reasons the Electorial College was established in the first place. The founding fathers knew what would happen if popular vote were the only factor.

ESPN is carefully pointing out how racist this is.

This is no time to let our guard down. If I recall, her heinous, even before she was sworn in as Senator said she would introduce a bill ending the electoral college.

BEWARE!

North Dakota's House voted 60-31

I have to wonder about the sanity of the 31 North Dakotaians who thought this was a good idea.

Seriously?

ESPN, therefore, is only proving what feminists say about knuckledragging SportsGuys is "true": They are stupid and will rape during commercial breaks.

I recall the same thing. It was just after Gore lost in 2000, wasn't it?

Exactly correct. The framers were truly men ahead of their time. They were certainly ahead of today's political class. Today's elected officials and judges could never contemplate the reasoned simplicity and fairness of the original Constitution.

Presidential Election 2000: Hillary and Gore BOTH began ramping this up soon after Gore took back his conceding to President George Bush. They went into overdrive on the subject while flying their lawyers to Florida to do the "hanging by a chad" scam.

The welfare class would choose our presidents...exactly as in Venezuela where the "have-nots" put Chavez into power because he took millions from "the rich" and gave a pittance to the poor. That, of course, is the Dems campaign strategy in every US election as well.

I'm sure I will get flamed but here goes.... The one good thing about ending the electoral college and also the reason none of you have to worry about it going away is the fact that it would open up the contest to third or fourth parties. I don't think many democrats nor Republicans would want to end their duopoly on the political process.

Exactly. I was just discussing this matter with my son night before last. I pulled out a map of CA; showed him the blue/red. The producers would be punished, those mostly producing nothing would be "electing" our presidents should the electoral college be abolished. He got the Founding Father's wisdom in a snap!, and replied: "so is this why the Democrats build dependency zones via their policies?"
