Honest Abe to go on trial - for racism

Daily Sun reports

Thursday, February 08, 2007

AURORA | The Community College of Aurora's professors will stage a mock trail that puts Abraham Lincoln on trial for racism at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the college's Fine Arts building at 16000 E. CentreTech Parkway.

The trial is free and open to the public. Based on his speeches and written documents, teams for the prosecution and the defense assembled from the Community College of Aurora's criminal justice program and will try Lincoln to determine whether he was a racist and how his beliefs and attitudes influenced the course of the Civil War, Reconstruction and post-war society.

It freed zero slaves except where the Union Army was standing at any point in time.

Another myth. First, you are wrong on the point of fact. Thousands of slaves in Virginia, and along the coastal areas of the Carolinas and Florida then occupied by Union troops were immediately freed when the EP went into effect on Jan., 1, 1863. (The only areas of the Confederacy exempted from the EP were parts of Louisiana and Tennessee which had already been declared pacified and where Federal courts were again in operation and under civilian control.

This often repeted myth paints the EP as a snap-shot in time when it was in reality, an ongoing policy. By the end of the war as Union troops advanced, over 3 million slaves were freed under the provisions of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. That's an average of over 100,000 freed slaves every month from 1863 onward.

It is not possible for you to prove Lincoln was not a racist, there is far too much evidence to the contrary.

So you say. I say different, but to get to the heart of the matter, let's hear your definition of a 'racist.'

Many on this thread are still denying that pathetic little Lincoln was no more than a Hillary in disguise. Chances are, they are going to keep denying all his witchhunt deeds until a Hillary or a Hillary, Marxist wannabe is elected and everybody finds themselves in the grip of a Hugo Chavez regime...

Look lady, Southern charm, you are wrong!

I'm curious to know if statements by Davis-Lee-Jackson were submitted as evidence; I suspect not since it was Lincoln's trial, not theirs.

their word's are not charished save in military matters because they were known bigots. Doesn't take rocket science to figure that out. It is also true that everyone is effected by their contemperaries but to say Lincoln was not a independant thinker even against factions of his own party is just plan stupid.

There are many people on the far left who attack FDR as a capitalist and a racist who fried people on the electric chair and suppressed civil rights during World War II.

I would suggest that you read a little history of Lincoln. Then in order to prove your claim you will need to prove that he never said any of the well attributed racist statements or that he never uttered any other racist statements that history has forgotten. Proving a negative is not possible.

Lincoln in his first debate with Stephen Douglas: "I, as well as Judge Douglas, am in favor of the race to which I belong, having the superior position. . . . I agree with Judge Douglas he [the Negro] is not my equal in many respects." Claiming that ones own race is superior and that the Negro race is not equal is racist by most definitions.

I have read a great deal on Lincoln -- likely more than you - and I know exactly what he said and the context in which he was saying it.

But if you want the discussion, please define what a racist is. Only with that definition settled, can proceed to the arguments pro and con.

A racist is a person who claims that their race is superior to other races. You claim to be an expert but ignore evidence that proves your assertion wrong. I know you can't prove your assertion, you might try to restate it; but asserting an opinion with out any supporting evidence does not make it so, my guess is that our discussion is over.

As usual for the Lost Causers, you conveniently leave out the next part of that Lincoln quote, the part that Douglas was trying to hammer him with throughout the debates...
I agree with Judge Douglas he [the Negro] is not my equal in many respects certainly not in color — perhaps not in intellectual and moral endowments; but in the right to eat the bread without leave of anybody else which his own hand earns, he is my equal and the equal of Judge Douglas, and the equal of every other man.”

Now, you might cal that racist by today's standards, but by the standards of the 1850s, it was revolutionarily racially egalitarian.

A racist is a person who claims that their race is superior to other races.

That's Supremacist, not a racist. Try again.

"Can you point to a quote from any Southern leader...."

Whoa Non!... The trial is not about whether any Southerner was racist, only Lincoln. Southern racism is of no import.

Truly a Non-Sequitur. :)

Some of us who went to public schooll went at a time when there was not as much left wing indoctrication as is going on now.

Public Schools have really become a nightmare for conservative thought and academic independence. They are failures in so many ways.

Thank you for a reasoned, responsible overview of Lincoln.

Lots of kooks around here refuse to admire what is admirable in an American hero like Lincoln.

Except when Lincoln wrote, "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it" in his 1862 letter to Horace Greeley.

Looks like the concept of "priorities" evades you, stains.
