High Ambition: Richardson Eyes the White House - Part 4 (His years as a power governor)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | February 11, 2007 | Thomas J. Cole

Posted on 02/11/2007 6:15:21 PM PST by CedarDave

Twenty days after being sworn in as governor, Bill Richardson [delivered] his State-of-the-State Address. ... This governor, a Democrat, packed an ambitious agenda: cut taxes, abolish the state board of education, help seniors with prescription drugs, crack down on drunken drivers and more. ... He quoted lyrics from Bob Dylan's '60s protest song "The Times They Are A-Changin'," warning lawmakers not to "stand in the doorway" or "block up the hall" as he pushed his agenda. "We won't be impeded," ...

The hard-charging Richardson, known to some as King Bill or GovZilla, has seemingly been on the move ever since that January day in Santa Fe.

Richardson consolidated power in his office, rewarded loyalists, brazenly punished opponents and polished his image as a tireless self-promoter while tightening controls over information.

Richardson has used his power to seek and get change in virtually every corner of New Mexico life, from slashing income taxes to creating pre-kindergarten to planning for a spaceport.

~~ snip ~~

Richardson hasn't always gotten what he wanted from the Legislature, most notably an increase in the minimum wage and comprehensive tax reform. His tax cuts— at least initially— were more than offset by increases in other taxes and fees.

There also have been questions about Richardson's friends and appointees and about campaign contributions from people or companies who have gotten state government contracts or favors.

Richardson is widely known for his gregarious personality, ... and love of sporting events, cigars, fine food and good drink.

He zipped about New Mexico in helicopters and speeding SUVs and jetted around the country in private aircraft to politic and attend major sporting events.

Richardson also has had his minions fetch his Starbucks and New York Times, apply his makeup and closely script his words— jokes included.

Bill Clintons mexican pimp was the only thing he was good at. Just a full blown liberal telling you how good he is.

Well our country has already run the experiement of electing arrogant I'm-for-sale Rat governors from smaller states twice. Think Mr. Peanut-I-love-Arab-money- Carter and Bubba Marc Rich Clinton. Do we really have to suffer through a third trial of that same experiement to prove they are not anything this country needs or even wants to tolerate. Bill Richardson already established the Chinese money pipeline via Los Alamos. We don't really need to let him have the whole country for his Asian "yard" sale.

My memory's weak, but it seems like the same Bill Richardson, when he was Clinton's ambassador to the UN, came down to Washington to interview a certain Monica Lewinsky, at the request of the President. Ambassador Richardson professed to be very impressed with Ms. Lewinsky and offered her a job at the UN. This would have conveniently gotten the President's girlfriend out of the White House and far away from investigators and other prying eyes, into a position that would have been so much better than anything she deserved that she might have kept her silence, out of gratitude to those who gave her the job (at taxpayer expense). But she turned down the offer.

If that was the same Bill Richardson, any honest person would have to concede the man is eminently qualified to be standard-bearer for the Democrat party.

Of all the articles in the five-part series, this one is the least favorable to him. It's lengthy and full of facts, and you can read it for free at the ABQ Journal just by listening/watching a 30-second commercial.

I'm sure the MSM will see these characteristics as great qualities because he is a dem. They accuse GWB of having this cowboy mentality and its bad for the country.

He's a pro-gun Democrat. Fits New Mexico to a T. A long shot since his conservative positions run counter to the stands of the Democrats' moonbat base.

I'm very familiar with NM politics. I've got some land NW of Questa and I spend quite a bit of time in Taos (building up my moonbat tolerance levels).

He's been known to pander to the moonbats and they're just stupid enough to buy his BS.

He is the least offensive of the RAT contenders, there is no fainter praise.

Richardson also has the potential to be the biggest threat in the general election. IMO he has about a 100/1 shot at getting the Democratic nomination but if he does get it, IMO he'd beat any GOP nominee but Giuliani.

Bear in mind that Clinton had Richardson and Holbrooke play good cop/bad cop in forcing the Serbs to give up on Bosnia, and I don't remember which of them was the bad cop. If Richardson was the bad cop, he might be mean enough to win the Democratic nomination.
