Gore announces 'global warming' concerts

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD, Associated Press Writer 7 minutes ago

Al Gore announced on Thursday a series of worldwide concerts to focus on the threat of climate change, with a powerhouse lineup from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Snoop Dogg to Bon Jovi.

The 24-hour event on July 7 is part of a campaign, Save Our Selves — The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis, that promoters hope will trigger a broad movement to address what the former vice president calls a global climate crisis.

"In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people," the environmental activist, filmmaker and 2000 Democratic presidential nominee said in a statement. "The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement."

Gore is often mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2008 despite his repeated statements that he's not running. Recently, some former aides met in Boston to discuss a campaign to draft the former vice president.

The concerts on seven continents will bring newfound publicity to Gore, who already is enjoying celebrity status with his Oscar-nominated documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth." Gore said he was thrilled that the film, on the perils of global warming, was nominated for best documentary and for best song, the latter nod coming for Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up."

The Academy Awards are Feb. 25.

More than 100 performers are scheduled to appear at the July concerts, including Etheridge, the Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Duran Duran, Korn, Pharrell, the Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

Promoters said the Live Earth concerts will take place in Shanghai, China; Johannesburg, South Africa; Sydney, Australia; London and cities to be announced in Japan, Brazil and the

I hate that Bonnaroo traffic! And doesn't at least one person die (of drugs) there every year?

I'm sure they are planning on using hybrid semi's and buses to move all the gear/performers from place to place.

Some thoughts on this:

Gore says these concerts will be even bigger than the Live Aid concerts!! And we all remember how much good those concerts did, don't we? As with so many liberal and self-obsessed things, it isn't really about impact- it is about intention or the appearance of caring. I don't know if the USA paid any attention to the 20th Anniversary Live Aid concerts (I was in the UK and it was a hugh event that every media outlet fawned over) but they at least acknowledged (Geldoff, Bono) that much of the $ and food from the first one never made it to the people it was intended. The big goal of the anniversary concerts wasn't to raise money, but awareness. In other words, we can't be held accountable for actually having an impact.

I agree that China is indeed an odd place to hold this "SOS" concert. I'd kind of hate to be the first one standing in line for tickets in Tianeneman Square. Will they televise panoramic shots of crowd and surroundings Given the somewhat murky Chinese air (due to pollutants)? Will their be banners in the crowd proclaiming "Carbon (Regulation) Free!!"? Looks like they'll have to throw a whole lot of cheap, dirty coal on the fire to make enough electricity for this event. Also, China is a long, long flight for any of the noted performers )and one I'm content to never make again).

South Africa? Are they going to play Sun City? Better not let Little Steven know. Will Winnie Mandela's guards be providing security?

Also, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill? Tell me it ain't so...

They've had both good and bad years. One year, they had three deaths while last year, there was just one, which happened outside of the grounds, when a kid ran out onto Interstate 24 and was hit by Ricky Scaggs' tour bus.

Does that mean they'll be playing on Antarctica? That can't be very environmentally sound.

Why don't these liberals use this concert money to help Katrina victims?

But then that would make sense and we're talking about liberals.

Yes, but I suspect we can expect an unseasonably cool period on the 7th of July, as history tends to repeat itself.

Notice the day of the concert: 07-07-07. It has a New Age witchcraft symbolism to it.

I wonder if the gorebot has thought this through?

It will be the dead of winter on those continents south of equator.

The concerts on seven continents will leave a bigger "carbon footprint" than most large US cities leave in a year.

But they will all really care and that's all that matters to environmental whackos isn't it? That and, of course, the money that they bring in.

Now its Climate Change.

Global Climate Change is so much more useful of a theory than Global Cooling (in vogue in the 70s) or Global Warming (in vogue in the 90s).

Is it warmer today than average? It is because of Global Climate Change caused by Bush and those damned SUVs.

Is it cooler today than average? Global Climate Change.

Is it wetter, dryer, windier, less windy, sunny, cloudy ... you name it. Whatever the weather happens to be on anywhere at any time, it is because of Global Climate Change.

If he loses some weight and gets back the "handsome" look...I think he's got a real shot.
Before I get flamed...there's a lot of Amurricans who go for style over substance.

I will go on record now. I think he has 2008 locked up.
