WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Democratic-controlled House issued a symbolic rejection of President Bush's decision to deploy more troops to Iraq on Friday, opening an an epic confrontation between Congress and commander in chief over an unpopular war that has taken the lives of more than 3,100 U.S. troops.

The vote on the nonbinding measure was 246-182.

Resolution criticized President Bush for his decision to send more troops to Iraq is a rare admonishment of a wartime commander-in-chief.

"The passage of this legislation signal a change in direction that will end the fighting and bring our troops home," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said before the vote when she endorsed the measure that takes issue with Bush's decision to send an additional 21,500 U.S. troops into battle.

The 17 are probably doing the will of the people in their district. That's the real truth to be dealt with. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I suspect the will of the people in any given district would be to direct a disproportionate share of the nation's wealth to the people in that district. That's why its a representative form of government.

Shays has often been a pleasant surprise. People see GOP and New England together and instantly have bad acid flashbacks to Lincoln "The Missing Linc" Chaffee. Shays does do what he can do.

He wins in a district that really has a hard time deciding whether it should support Lieberman or Lamont. He also supports the troops. He must have the contortion ability of an escape artist.

>>This non-binding stunt has the same effect of them sitting around smelling their own... well, you know.<<

I think it may have real effects - encouraging Al Sadre and Al Quaida. I said up to the night before the first missile that President Bush was just using the leverage given by congress to put pressure on Saddam and we would not invade for a variety of reasons -legal and practical...

But we did invade and we have lives at risk and have assumed responsibility there. Appearing like congress may try to force us to turn and run could also hurt U.S. troop morale.

Whatever you think about how Johnson got us into Vietnam, we know now that the military people there were effected by attitudes back home.

i hope that the Texans that voted for this asshat "CHET EDWARDS" will see that when you vote for the democrat party....you get a weasel.

This clown ran on being a "conservative" that could "save" the Waco VA hospital. It was never going to go away, but he made people believe that he could save the hospital. he has Texas A&M University and Waco in his district that is conservative....

will all CONSERVATIVE patriotic Texans in this clown's district e-mail the newspapers, tv stations, and his home page in order to NEVER forget that he stabbed the President and all of our soldiers in the back.

Statement on the vote from my Representative Mike Simpson(R-ID), voted Nay!

“This congressional resolution emboldens our enemies and undermines our troops while they are in the middle of fighting a war. By voting on a symbolic, nonbinding resolution, my colleagues are using the war and our troops for political gain,” Simpson said. “While our brave military men and women are putting their lives on the line every day in Iraq to preserve our freedoms, Congress is debating a resolution designed to do nothing more than embarrass the President.”

“I believe that we should be above playing politics with war. We must continue to support the troops and provide them with the resources they need to do the job so they can return home safely.”

Heather won by about 800 votes after ten-days of waiting the the Rats trying to pull a Florida by counting every challenged vote. She is independent of the White House and has been critical of our policies in Iraq, telling her concerns directly to the White House. But she is also a veteran and an Air Force Academy graduate. She may not agree with specifics of our policy but understands the signals such a resolution sends to the radicals in Iraq and elsewhere in the middle east.
