Torso Found In Garage; Police Hunt For Husband

Police Looking For Stephen Grant In Disappearance Of Tara Wife

POSTED: 5:59 pm EST March 2, 2007
UPDATED: 11:05 am EST March 3, 2007

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. -- Sheriff's deputies and evidence technicians were granted access in and around the home of Tara and Stephen Grant on Friday.

During the search, police said they believe they found Tara's torso in the garage of the Grant home.

In a press conference Saturday, police said they are looking for Stephen Grant and said, "He is their No. 1 and only suspect in the case."

They have not seen him and are not aware of his location. The last contact they had with him was 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Police were told he was last seen in a white full-size pick-up truck.

Hackel said he is working with the prosecutor to bring murder charges against him.

Police will search the area of 29 Mile and Mound roads for additional evidence.

If you have any information on Stephen's whereabouts, call Macomb County Sheriff's Department at 586-469-5151.

Hackel told Local 4, "They will seek criminal charges against anyone else who is involved in this case."

Tara Grant has been missing since Feb. 9.

Police have been investigating and searching for clues in the case. Another search is being conducted at a tool and die shop in Mount Clemens, where Stephen Grant works sporadically for his father, police said.

Rescue 4 was at the scene when investigators arrived and said they were confident they would find some sort of evidence. Local 4 reporter Kevin Dietz said investigators carried out evidence bags sealed off with red tape that will go to the sheriff's department to be analyzed. Detectives said they are looking for any evidence of a crime scene.

Investigators said they want to look at Stephen Grant's computer records and appointment books.

A Sports Utility Vehicle was taken from the home overnight.

In a press conference Friday night, Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel explained to the media his department had enough probable cause to obtain a court-ordered search warrant for the home and business.

He offered few other details on what sheriff's deputies were hoping to find inside the home or how long they would be inside.

Stephen Grant was pulled over by police at 28 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue late Friday afternoon. He was placed in the back of a squad car and patted down, witnesses told Local 4.

"The stop today was to detain him because we had a search warrant," Hackel said.

Hackel said Stephen Grant was not arrested or placed into custody. He said the only time Stephen Grant was arrested was on Feb. 15 for driving on a suspended license.

After sitting in the squad car for about 20 minutes, Stephen Grant was allowed to get out of the squad car and get into his jeep. Officers then followed Stephen Grant to his home, where Hackel said he escorted the officers inside.

Hackel said Stephen Grant did not stay for the search and his children were not at the home at the time they arrived.

Officials never stated that they had any suspects in mind, and though Stephen Grant said officials named him a suspect in the case, Hackel said that was not true and the most important thing at this time is to find Tara Grant.

Stephen Grant's attorney, David Griem, talked to Local 4 after the news conference.

"There was no answer given whatsoever as to why, for two weeks, has Stephen Grant not been a suspect?" Griem said. "Why, for two weeks, has there not been probable cause and what has changed?"

Griem said he did not believe there was probable cause for a search.

"When all is said and done, I'm going to shove that search warrant where the sun doesn't shine," Griem said.

At first glance I thought, "What's the big deal?"

Well, I don't know on what grounds they got the search warrant (other than "wife missing" of course) but the fact that they found her torso in the garage and then he vanished is... gosh... a little incriminating.

One could exercise a cadaver dog on the sidewalk and if the wind was right and if there was any odor, I would think there would be a hit. I know it has been cold and the poor lady would be quite frozen.

If it was in the summer, I would be able to release some carrion beetles with aluminum streamers. If they circled the house, that would be probable cause.

Same here. Isn't the case where the husband said she got into a "dark car with a strange man"? That sounded so fishy I knew he'd killed her.

I was watching this last nite, but why did they let him go during the search?

They pulled him over while he was driving to his home, took him to the home, then let him leave???????

So why pull him over in the first place?

I'm not in Michigan, but I was looking for it on national news. This happened this morning?

Apparently yes. I'm in Michigan and I would bet it's all over the TV news here but I'm too lazy to get up and look.

I saw the husband being interviewed the other day and it looked like he had something to hide.

Is this the lady who worked in PR and got into a dark car? Talk about a lame story to begin with?! I'm sure the detectives' gut instincts were going crazy with that, wonder what finally changed that they were finally able to get the search warrant...

These stories always freak me out: the person who was supposed to love you the most. The person you trusted the most. The person you'd made love to, had children with, believed in... and then they kill you. It just blows me away. Times like this I'm glad to be single.
