It seems that a Rutgers student or employee [anonymously] has forwarded Phi Beta Con blogger Candace de Russy a lovely email about a "Course Curricula Workshop" to incorporate a "queer agenda" into classes. The email was sent to all Teaching Assistants at Rutgers:
Integrating Sexual Identity Issues Into Your Course Curricula
This session will help TAs integrate sexual identity issues (i.e., queer, lesbian, gay, bi, homosexual, in-the-life, gender queer, butch, femme, drag, etc.) into their course curricula. TAs may also bring syllabi in which they have integrated the "queer agenda." Cheryl Clarke, who will be facilitating the session, will also be bringing syllabi in which the queer identity subject matter was integrated or in which it occupies the entire course.
Usually students in master level or doctoral level programs at universities and who are on scholarship teach lower-level classes as a part of their duties. Although I could tell some stories myself about my time as a TA at Clemson University, and I attended required curricula workshops, I was thankfully never subjected to such silliness.
Think about this for a moment. TA's, along with salaried professors, have a challenging enough schedule as it is between their own classes, their teaching load, office hours, exam grading, and more. The fact that there is a whole workshop devoted to such a miniscule aspect of teaching, with an agenda devoted to a miniscule demographic, for classes generally devoted to teaching freshmen students the basics of their field or fulfilling low-level required courses is simply mind blowing in the Sheer Waste of Time department, never mind the questionable integrity of integrating the Queer Agenda into basic literature courses.

At least you can tell that to yourself when you see a cloud of poison gas hovering over your local chemical plant.
Collage? Not for everyone, actually two years of working before entering college should be a prerequisite for all who haven’t a clue as to what they want to be or do in real life. The sort of Social Engineering going on here is not for someone with a brain and adding insult to injury...some parent is paying for this non-education.

I also had to take "humanities" classes. Many of the male graduate students working as TAs in literature struck me as "effeminate". The time frame was 1974-1976. It wasn't in fashion to be "out of the closet" at that time. I'm not sure I would tolerate "in your face" presentation of gay perversion in a required lower division classroom.

Why can't the TAs simply be taught just to treat each student fairly and with respect? It's obvious they are only doing this to further the homosexual agenda at Rutgers University, regardless of whether the TAs or other students agree with such a controversial issue.

I'm a TA at Rutgers and Pinkbell, what you said about treating all students with respect is exactly what I try to do. I know Rutgers has a reputation, but honestly, I would not make too much out of this thing.
We TA's get *tons* of emails like this from the university about teaching workshops. It seems that every week there is another teaching workshop, focusing on topics from designing a course website, or creating effective paper topics, to stuff like this. All of these workshops are *completely optional* and I have no idea how many TA's go to these things - no TA in my department attends these workshops, as far as I know. Yes I got the email about sexual orientation, and deleted it once I saw the subject line, just as I delete every other email about a teaching workshop that comes from the university. I don't have time for any workshops! I think most other TA's are the same.
Never have I been told by a superior to bring up sexual orientation issues in class, do activism in the classroom, or identify gay and lesbian students and treat them differently. Never. It just has not been an issue for my department. I think they have the sense to see that fair treatment of gay students falls under the umbrella of rules that cover the fair and professional treatment of all students. There's no need to bring in special rules regarding gay students - basic professional ethics are sufficient for dealing with any student - gay or not.
My job is to educate my students; if I pried into their personal lives (such as their sexual orientation or activities) I would probably be fired. Not that I would even want to know about that stuff anyhow - it's just none of my freakin' business. And students recognize this too. While I'm sure that I have had gay students, I've never had a student who made his or her sexual orientation an issue in the classroom. It just does not come up.
I'm sure there are some TA's or faculty at Rutgers who bring ideology and activism into classrooms where it has no place. Trust me, these persons are a minority among the faculty. Also don't assume that this reflects the attitudes of the 30,000+ students that attend Rutgers. By and large, Rutgers students are like students everywhere - largely apathetic or aloof to politics, ideology, and activism. There are some students who get into it, but they are not a significant segment of the student body by any means. Most Rutgers students are far too busy with juggling coursework and jobs and other activities that I'd rather not know about ;) to worry much about politics.
