It is with growing dismay and frustration that I am watching so many of my friends and acquaintances in the conservative community attack Ann Coulter for her comments pointing out that saying the word 'faggot' can get you sent to a rehabilitation clinic.
That she said it in the context of primping pretty boy Democrat presidential candidate John Edwards has sent conservatives to the fainting couch in an episode of 'why I never!' mass hysteria.
Ann Coulter has walked point for conservatives for almost a decade. She has been assaulted, threatened and stalked. She requires bodyguards for protection. Liberals believe they are justified in physically attacking Ann. I heard one say so at CPAC--not in response to her rehab joke, but because Ann 'insults people.'
Ann has been an early and loyal friend of Free Republic. She is one of the few prominent conservatives who regularly breaks bread with FReepers. Her friendship is now being repayed by FReepers who want her driven out of conservatism.
That so many conservatives want Ann banned from CPAC is a sad indicator of the state of conservatism. It is not Ann Coulter's fault that Republicans lost both houses of Congress. It is not Ann Coulter's fault that President Bush is not popular. Sacrificing Ann Coulter on the altar of political correctness will not win the elections of 2008 nor will it prevent conservatives from being sent to rehab for uttering politically incorrect words and ideas.
After Ann uttered the words that have given so many conservatives the vapors, the line for her booksigning at CPAC was just as long as usual. I know, I was standing in that line. If CPAC attendees were so outraged about Ann's remarks, it was not manifested there. I didn't learn about the controversy until I read about it online later that night.
I spent the next day at CPAC. Ann's remarks were not a hot topic. I know because the only time I heard it talked about was when I brought it up. Those I spoke with about it were not upset.
I do not wish to speak ill of my friends and acquaintances who are dumping on Ann, other than to express my disappointment. I do wish they'd reconsider and stop attacking a friend who has walked point for them. Liberals must be laughing themselves silly as they watch us take out someone they've been wanting to eliminate for years.
I'm sure you know that Ann and Drudge are very good friends and last night Drudge as well felt that Ann would have been better off not using CPAC to make her comments.
Most of us expect hyperbole from Ann and are hardly shocked, but that conference was meant to showcase our Presidential nominees. She forced them into an uncomfortable place.
This week, the show is getting a lot of help from conservatives, who stupidly think that shutting her up will help their image with people who think nothing of wishing the VP dead.
It's foolishness. Ann will shut up when THEY shut up, and until then, I won't criticize her.
Thanks for posting this! Republicans attacking Ann Coulter!! If only they could show the same courage(?) when when it comes to defeating the left in this country. If the liberals weren't being offended over this comment, they would be just as offended over something else.
Liberals come along with their phony manufactured outrage and Rudy McRomney and a whole host of others immediately crap their pants. Real courage! They need to take a lesson from Ann and learn how to fight back! Go ANN!!
Ditto on the Hear Hear. Ann was right. People just can't stand the unvarnished truth.
Thank you, Kristinn.
It's nice to know others remember what Ann has done for our side over the years. She has done more for conservatives than many "conservative" politicians, IMO.
The popular attack around here that Ann only cares about herself, making money, and selling her books is worthy of being spewed by the moonbats - who are known to screech same.
The liberal outrage is not so much that she used the word "faggot" but by doing so she would dare defy them and unapologetically venture into their 'politically incorrect' minefields that most others fear to tread. I guess it's gonna take a woman to take back the Party from the pansies.
Good post!
So true!
And this is why they are distancing themselves. They might have to take a position and risk rehab. Sigh, no heroes here.
I love your screen name, your tagline and your comment...not necessarily in that order.
I love Ann but sometimes she tends to speak befor she thinks. I guess thats because she likes to hang out with Bill Maher.
"... but I sometimes think she goes too far."
Who gets to decide what's too far?
"What hypocrites the stupid liberals are."
The stupid ones are those who kowtow to liberals expecting to curry favor with them. Will they ever learn? How did it go for Trent Lott? Bet they love him after apologizing umpteen times!
We know how liberals will react. Our side needs to learn to tell them to shove it!
Does everyone understand that the joke played off the furor of the 'Gray's Anatomy' show? An actor on the show used the term and was sent to rehab.
I am suprised that people can't see how what she said was vulgar and inapporiate.
Ann did exactly what Whoopi Goldberg did at a Kerry fundraiser in 04.
I had no idea that so many freepers were defending Whoopi back then.
While I really don't have a problem with the word 'faggot', I think that Ann Coulter needs to be realistic in the modern world of what sort of reaction you're going to get talking like that. Is Edwards a faggot? Quite possibly, I don't know. But it really isn't such a good idea talking like that in public, because it drags conservatives down to the liberal level of name-calling.
By the same token, I have NO RESPECT for 'faggots' or their equivalents.
--AND THIS IS WHAT THEY (LIBS) WRITE ABOUT HER
p The fact that the negative publicity might hurt conservative causes is immaterial.
Hey! I Like YOU. This should be a program for Recovering Politicians.
