Homosexuality is here to stay. And recently in Jamaica, which is considered to be a highly homophobic society, more homosexuals have been coming out of the closet.

Last month, there was wide-ranging discussion after a number of homosexual commercial sex workers spoke out on a television current affairs programme. Many were astonished that they were so bold while others were angry, stating they were too bold. Others felt a sense of compassion, believing that homosexuals are 'sick' and need help.

Flair solicited the views of experts on whether homosexuals can be cured.

Dr. Asquith Reid, clinical psychologist:

"It depends on how you define it. If you look at it from a religious perspective where homosexuality is seen as wrong and a sin, then certainly, they can be cured.

Also, if it's a matter of choice, then you can choose to or not to engage in such practices. But if you think it is biological, then it would be hard to change.

If it is a learned behaviour that has become integral to your being, then it's just as deep as if it were hereditary. It also depends on the will power. Some people are better able to control their behaviour than others. Thus, it may be said that those who cannot control theirs are bad because they continue with a behaviour that is socially unacceptable.

'Moral fibre'

While it is dangerous in our context to be open with the practice, it speaks of 'moral fibre' for the person who can stand up for what he or she believes.

However, if we are speaking of inclination or propensity to be attracted to the same sex, then perhaps it may not be a changeable behaviour. It is always a toss-up of what is right or wrong.

The problem we have is that many are not prepared to accept other people's behaviour even when it does not concern or touch them. One must ask: Why do people take it up on themselves to be God and make it affect them in such a way that they try to injure or kill someone doing this? Why is God not doing this?"

A homosexual's view:

Chris, 24 years old, is a commercial sex worker who sells his body to men. He is from an inner-city community in Kingston. When Flair asked Chris if he believe homosexuals could be 'cured', his immediate response was "Yes".

Not born like this

"I believe that homosexuals can be cured because we were not born like this. It is just the mentality, and often a homosexual is like a child who sees certain things and wants a certain lifestyle. Plus, some will go the extra mile just to get what they want," he continued.

In Chris' case, over three years ago he wanted a pair of shoes and his friends introduced him to the streets, where he remains today. He states, however, that he has other gay friends who have changed their lifestyle because they got tired of this way of life.

"I believe I can and will change one day but mi nah go lie to yu still, not right now because of my needs."

He pointed out that we must not be fooled because some people don't want to change, but some will fight their urges by taking up Christianity.

Names changed on request.

Chris is a hooker who lives in ghetto. There, that's more accurate.

Poor guy.

I bet he is sick and tired of the "lifestyle". He's seen the worst of it. Any behaviour that delights in inflicting pain on others is demented.

Something that never gets mentioned is that male homosexuals promote the genetics, but the lesbians promote it as a choice.

In the mid 90s Newsweek did a very thorough cover story on this, but then a new political angle arose and the media never referred back to that story.

How do these people function?

Look: I have an inclination to smash people's heads against the wall when they wait in line for 5 minutes and don't think about what they want to order until the restaurant employee asks "What will you have?" Or if they take 2 minutes to answer the question "Do you want fried with that?" "Oh, I don't know. Do I? Maybe I do. Then again ..."

But, you know, I don't give in to my violent inclinations. I know it's not a toss-up as to whether it would be right or wrong. It would be clearly wrong. And so, as a civilized human, with a decent level of self-control, I wait patiently behind morons as they order food as if they were solving difficult problems.

The inclination is there.
The behavior is changeable.
It's not a question of right or wrong, because it's clearly wrong.

I think it is refreshing to see a homosexual finally admit that they have a choice about their behavior. Even if they can't help the urge, there are many things that are inherent in all of us (as another poster points out regarding bashing in heads) and we have to resist it or deal with it somehow. Alcoholics are made the way they are and it takes a daily determination every day of their life to stay away--homos can do the same thing if need be.

I am assuming this statement is aimed directly at Christians because of the reference to God.
My question to you is, does the author accept what the bible teaches on this subject, or doesn't that concern or touch them? One must ask: Why do those who choose this lifestyle decide how God manifest himself to others? Maybe he is using people to share the truth in boldness because he loves them and wants them to repent.

Unfortunately many Christians (questionable?)have approached those engaged in this lifestyle with hostility. That is wrong for them to do. However, even though the messenger is wrong in their approach, the message is truth. It is what God teaches in his word. Don't think so? Read it for yourselves. It is after all the most published book in the world. Pick up a bible and read for yourselves what God has to say on the subject. God loves all sinners, no matter what you have done or are doing. He wants all to repent (turn and walk away) from their sin. You cannot do this without the power of the Holy Spirit indwelling inside of you.

Could it be that guys are more hard wired in their sexual proclivities?

Thanks for your very good post!

Mine merely referred to the use of euphemisms in the story. In other words, the author was using words that did not accurately describe the picture he was painting with the article.

That's all.

I loathe cliches and euphemisms.

Homosexuality can't be cured of the urge, but the need to act as a homosexual can be 'eased'.
Just like an alcoholic can be cured, but will always be faced with a struggle, it's the same for homosexuals.
