Threats of violence, litigation and legislation sprang up after a list of people allowed to carry concealed weapons was released.
The Roanoke Times will not re-post a list of gun owners on its Web site, even after being told amid continuing public furor that releasing the information does not violate state law.
First published Sunday, the database of more than 135,000 people allowed to carry concealed handguns has become the most controversial content in roanoke.com's history -- sparking threats of violence, litigation and legislation.
One day later, the list was removed from the site because of concerns that state police might have inappropriately included the names of crime victims on a list it provided to the newspaper.
Although there is a law that protects the identity of some victims in certain circumstances, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Tuesday the restriction does not apply to the concealed-weapons list.
"The information released to The Roanoke Times was in total compliance with the Freedom of Information Act," Geller said. "It is up to the recipient of that information to be a responsible guardian of the information."
While Geller declined to comment on whether the newspaper acted responsibly, hundreds of angry readers have said in e-mails, phone calls and even threats that it did not.
By naming everyone in Virginia who has received court permission to carry a concealed weapon, critics said, the newspaper invaded the privacy of law-abiding citizens and all but invited criminals to burglarize homes for guns. Another concern is that victims of domestic abuse, who might have armed themselves for protection, are now in danger of being tracked down by their abusers via the database.
Although the legal concerns stated by the newspaper as the reason for removing the names no longer seem to apply,

The Roanoke Times is a liberal rag anyway. They promote homosexuality and all of the other liberal crapola. Comes in handy for our puppy though.
Apparently, the package was left by the shipping company DHL and it had DHL shipping supplies inside. If that package scared Trejbal, he did the right thing getting the street closed down.

Given the author's intellectual dishonesty (constantly changing the rationale for running the story), as well as his clear violation of his employer's privacy policy, I'll bet he put his address up AFTER it was listed elsewhere.
It is what a bottom dwelling hypocritical leftist weenie would do.

It's also wrong to keep a list of gun owners.
I don't care if someone knows I carry. I have a sign in my front yard that says, "This house insured by Smith and Wesson."

I know that it was Mr. Trejbal that wrote the original article but regardless, to the others who had no part in writing the piece...it is your paper and you get the heat right along with it.
The next time you sit around and ponder why people in general have little respect for journalists....just use this nonsense as a shining example.
Overwhelming incompetence masquerading as journalism and hiding behind the FOIA is still overwhelming incompetence.
Bottom-line; people's lives were put at risk as a result of this vain and irresponsible grab at attention. Whoever is ultimately responsible for the paper's content, should be fired [along with the ahem "journalist"].

My point exactly! If I lived in VA and they printed my info I'd sue them for violating their own privacy policy.
I think a lawsuit [amybe a class action?], in addition to getting advertisers to stop advertising, would be a great double-whammy.
"There are good reasons the records are open to public scrutiny. People might like to know if their neighbors carry. Parents might like to know if a member of the car pool has a pistol in the glove box. Employers might like to know if employees are bringing weapons to the office."
I e-mailed the paper on their website, copying the privacy policy you posted, and stating that I hoped that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against the writer and the editor's of the op-ed page give the clear violation. I expect them to do nothing.
I also told them that when I next visit the Roanoke area, I will be very careful not to frequent any of their major advertisers, and that that column was the most irresponsible editorial I have ever seen.

This article came out within a week of the DC circuit court affirming that the 2nd amendment was an individual right. This was nothing but a left-wing rant in retaliation of the Court's ruling. They thought they were being cute by publishing all the individuals who had carry permits, since the Court said it was an individual right.

I'll keep this short and sweet for the benefit of Mr. Trejbal's evident lack of comprehension:
By all means, let’s use the same ‘logic’ Mr. Trejbal employed in his article, “Shedding Light on Concealed Handguns” to demand the public disclosure of the names and addresses of everyone who visits a state or Federally funded abortion clinic.
Next, it is disingenuous and intellectually dishonest to conflate concealed carry permit holders with criminals, as was done in his article. But this is what liberals do, and it should serve as a reminder of what they really, really think of those of us who choose to take responsibility for our own lives and safety.
Finally, Mr Trejbal's true agenda is to make it that much more difficult for us to defend ourselves. He would be happy to see our right to own firearms abolished if he could make it so. A man who does this is not just defecating on the United States Constitution and the Second Amendment; he is presuming to tell you how much your life is worth. He presumes that he has the right to dictate the terms of existence to you. This is one of the hallmarks of the liberal mindset, and that is precisely what animates Mr. Trejbal's disclosure. It is not merely wrong. It is not just a matter of opinion. It is evil personified.

Now, if anyone in Virginia has a lick of sense they will seek an injunction, and then legislative protection for that data, and restrict it to specific inquiries instead of allowing anyone to make the whole thing public.
I think it is an invasion of privacy, because the whole purpose of carrying a concealed weapon , if for others not to know it is on your person. Otherwise... the license should read carry your weapon out in the open, in full view for all to see.
