The exceptional group E₈ breaks as:

E₈ -> SO(16) -> SO(10) X SO(6) -> SU(5) X SU(3)

The gauge group of superstrings is E₈ X E₈ after compactification of higher dimensions. The string is a heterotic string, and E₈ X E₈ encompasses the Standard Model.
