WHat about cat foods? Why does the headline say dog food? If it's not both, then we have another deadly source.

Someone in a thread posted that the Bush Administration had relaxed the import rules for pet food leading for the new wheat source from China to be used by the pet food manufacturer.

Anyone know if it's true?

I heard the standards were recently loosened by the Bush Admin for pet food. That's why menufoods recently used a company from China. I want to know if that's true.

If the wheat gluten went to a manufacturer in Canada, though, I'm not sure what any administration could've done about it. Is Menu Foods Canadian?

Another question: If this filler was indeed produced in Canada, is aminopterin approved for use as a rodenticed in Canada? Just curious.

If this poison was sprayed on wheat shipped to the US then what other wheat based products should we be worrying about?
Just think of all the wheat based foods we consume (cereal, flour, bread, crackers, cookies, etc.)

Time to embargo all wheat products from China.

Let's see if the crapweasels in DC can handle this.

Aminopterin is not even listed in my toxic veterinary formulary for emergencies and treatment. Treatment would be supportive in all cases and is what most veterinarians have been doing...it depends upon the dose ingested by the cat or dog.

The dog and cat food companies that were not associated with Menu Foods were right in pulling their products from the market if there was a chance that the wheat gluten used in the manufacture of their foods were from the same Chinese source....

What I do not understand is why in the hell are we importing or the Canadians importing wheat products from other countries when the cost of Canadian and US wheat is so cheap.. There are wheat farmers out there going bankrupt because wheat is so cheap.

I remember this happening before when a foreign country used a pesticide that was not approved in the US got into the US food supply. There are some real dangerous pesticides and rodenticides out there used by other countries that have no use in the US....there are some good ones that aren't used by the US that are foolish for us not to use...DDT....

Over a thousand pets have died from the tainted pet food,

http://www.petconnection.com/blog/category/2007-food-recall/

Pet-food recall: More numbers … and some help
I’m sad to say we’ve passed a milestone. We now have more than 1,000 pets reported as deceased into our PetConnection.com database.

Again, we must put things in perspective. These are self-reported numbers. We have asked everyone if they checked the brand against the recall list, and have also asked them to provide a veterinary reference. We felt that this would give us a better chance of having numbers that reflect reality. Most people both named their veterinarian and named the brand.

We have said from the first that we put the database up because we believed based on all the anecdotal evidence we were seeing — in our e-mail boxes, and on forums and blogs — that the number of dead pets was far greater than what the government was, and is, reporting.

We still believe that to be the case, and today we finally started to see other experts agree with us, such as here and here. We believe there will be more news on this front, and that the “official” count will grow as well.

We also have from the first encouraged people to report their information to the FDA and to the companies and the manufacturer. You can find all those links here. In the meantime, we continue to keep our database open for entries.

Tomorrow, we’re going to try to get some perspective on all this. Where do we go from here?

In the meantime, if you haven’t checked your pet’s food — “wet” food only is listed — against the recall list, you must do so. If you even suspect your pet has eaten any of the recalled product — even if the animal seems fine — call your veterinarian about a diagnostic test of kidney function. It’s an investment in your peace of mind that may save your pet’s life. (Read our piece on kidney disease for more information.)

Not a problem, I am sure your Chihuahua is as important to you as my schnauzer and cat are to me!!! Plus I have had a cat in the past the suffered rat poison!! Take care of your dog and never feel your being overly concerned.

Fox is suppose to air a press conference coming up soon.

From what I can find, it looks as though the worldwide wheat yield may be down or tight enough to make Chinese imports cheaper. And apparently the Chinese have wheat to spare this year.
