I've got a dear friend that lives in Vanuatu. Is there more information than just that a 7.4 hit? Casualties, damages? etc?

Tsunami Information Statement #1

To: Tsunami warning system participants in the U.S. West Coast States, Alaska, and British Columbia

From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (Experimental Web Product)

Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #1 issued 03/24/2007 at 6:00PM PDT

A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning or watch is in effect for these areas.

Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.

At 5:40 PM Pacific Daylight Time on March 24, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.3 occurred near the Vanuatu Islands.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii will issue messages for Hawaii and other areas of the Pacific outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska.

This will be the only statement issued for this event by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center unless conditions warrant. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate predicted times only, not that a wave was generated.)

A few years ago, Vanuatu was one of the places that the Global Warming cultists insisted would be under the ocean soon, and Michael Crichton famously mocked this theory in State of Fear, showing that the predicted sinking never happened.

There is no assessment yet made, no one attributes earthquakes to Bush or Global Warming and a dear friend of mine lives there. Congratulations, you must be proud. You pissed off a complete stranger over the internet for your ignorant remarks.

No kidding, the Loma Prieta was a 7.1 for a point of reference (that was the '89 San Fran quake for all of you who weren't there and don't have that permanently branded into your memory)

It was sarcasm. Everything that has happened the last 6 years has been blamed by the true ignorants and enemies on the president and/or global warning. Someone has to post and get it out of the way:') Prayers for your friend.

I hope all is well with your friend,

He probably is. Colby is a tough ole bastard (he's a barrister to boot) but I still have some worry. I've known the man for 9+ years and he's my favorite Aussie. He lived in Darwin for a while then moved to Vanuatu. His internet connection was never better than dialup, so there may be some time before I hear. Still though, I worry.

I understand what you're saying. I'm guilty of it too. The "bush's fault" thing however is about mostly trivial BS.

This is about real people and life or death. I'm concerned for my friend. He is probably just fine, but that quake is a whopper.

Understand, I'm not a newb to FR. I get that.

It pisses me the eff off when it's not appropriate. In this case, it's not. It's not funny or appropriate when real people are probably dying.
