Forbes: Social Issues Won't Derail Rudy
Human Events Online | March 30, 2007 | John Gizzi

Posted on 03/30/2007 2:53:04 PM PDT by poisonivy27

The most high-profile national conservative leader to endorse Rudy Giuliani for President so far insists that the former New York mayor's non-conservative stands on social issues such as abortion won't derail his candidacy in the Republican nomination process next year.

"I've met with several social conservatives and they are leaning strongly to Rudy," said Steve Forbes, publisher and two-time GOP presidential hopeful, who has just come out for Giuliani for President. Although he said he couldn't give the names of most of those he has talked to who are poised to join the Giuliani bandwagon, Forbes did cite Joel Rosenberg -- evangelical Christian, best-selling novelist, and a veteran of past Forbes campaigns -- who was prepared to join Giuliani's campaign team. In Forbes' words, "He thinks Rudy's the real deal, as do at least two others I'm talking to. Giuliani will have a [conservative] team in formation."

So, you think 4 or 8 years of Hillary would be better than Rudy?

I don't think we'd see much difference, except watching Bill's antics would be a lot of fun.

less than strict conservative social politics

Allow me to paraphrase GunRunner's excellent comment.

Rejecting Rudy as a PRIMARY candidate because he has supported gay marriage, federal funding for abortion and partial birth abortion, gun registration, and the Senate's guest worker program is not "naive perfectionism", it's COMMON SENSE!!!

Conservative principles are not "purist idealism".

Although he said he couldn't give the names of most of those he has talked to who are poised to join the Giuliani bandwagon . . .

This is no different than Bill Simon's comment a few weeks ago, in which he stated that he "has an assurance that Giuliani will nominate strict constructionists to the U.S. Supreme Court."

No assurance from Giuliani himself, mind you . . . just "an assurance" from some unnamed person who could be just about anyone on the freakin' planet.

I get the impression that much of Guiliani's shallow support is from people who do not want to lose at any cost. 2006 hurt too much and now they are grabbing at the first RINO as if a drowning man grabbing the point of a sword.

I doubt it will be worse. The biggest difference between RinoRudy adn Hitlery is he looks better in a dress.

I agree.

Rudy's legacy will be "millions and millions" of socon voters feeling disenfranchised, while rudy thinks he can chase after the thin slice of hundreds of thousands of moderates who are notoriously fickle. Rudy won't be recognizable when the Clintoons are done with him (AND hildebeast runs to the right of him, chasing after the same muddled-middle voters), and the fickle middle-of-the-road moderates will vote democrat.

If Republicans can't do better than an anti-gun, pro abortion, open borders, appointer of liberal judges, they deserve to lose.

What's worse, is that Rudy bots are telling us that we MUST vote for Rudy if we really want to beat Hillary, and that supporting someone who is conservative is just as good as voting for Hitlery.

I absolutely reject that. This isn't 2000 where a vote for Nader helped Bush on the democratic side, this is the PRIMARY. And in the primary you should support the strongest conservative candidate. If Rudy wins the nomination, I'll deal with that when it comes. But for now, I'm not supporting a gun-grabbing pro-abort open border RINO to win the nomination.

"I've met with several social conservatives and they are leaning strongly to Rudy,"

Just like the mysterious "Senior high-ranking officials" that appears from thin air whenever politicians need a reference.

Forbes is a good man, and I believe social conservatives should be much more fair to Rudy than many have been. As a matter of political analysis, though, I'd take his comment with a large grain of salt. Forbes is an East Coast rich guy. These types, even if social conservatives themselves, are not the best sources for what the social conservatives as a whole (or their leaders) are thinking or will do.

So, you being a person who believes in principles, unlike the rest of us mere humans, don`t care if Hillorat and her anti-gun bunch run the country? Wonder who is going to get the support from Sara Brady?

"don`t care if Hillorat and her anti-gun bunch run the country?"

Rudy is just as much a member of the anti-gun bunch as Hillary... perhaps more, as he's done more.

Who said that I do not care? Your over the top rhetorical flourish is a bunch of Barbara Streisand.

I will not vote for anyone who holds the Constitution (that I defended) in contempt. Get over it and go insult someone who cares about your childish accusations.

Republicans may deserve to lose. America does not.

I'm not willing to throw away 200 years of history because I disagree with a candidate on two or three issues.
