Topeka, KS (March 30, 2007) - In accordance with its over-riding commitment to pet health and well-being, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the market.
Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, WHEAT GLUTEN for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to MENU FOODS.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples from this period show the presence of a small amount of MELAMINE. Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry represents less than one half of one percent of all Hill's products.
This is the only product Hill's currently sells in the United States and Canada that contains wheat gluten from any supplier.
No other Hill's Prescription Diet® or Science Diet® products are affected by this voluntary recall. Hill's Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline canned cat foods, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution. Together with this earlier withdrawal, less than 1% of all Hill's products have been affected.
The voluntary recall of Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from sellers. This recall does not include Prescription Diet m/d Feline canned food which contains no wheat gluten.
Consumers should stop using this product and return it for a refund. All Hill's products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled product.
Hill's expects to resume shipment shortly of a reformulated version of this highly beneficial product that will not contain wheat gluten. Please check with your veterinarian for an alternative Prescription Diet until m/d Feline dry is reformulated and made available again.

Yes, we had a few servings of Purina "elderly cat" formula left. I should be able to exchange the Hill's for Science Diet with no trouble.
If there was a ban on what was called tainted beef, I don't understand why wheat can't be identified as tainted.
BTW I am still not going to say what I am thinking. It doesn't negate what you said. It's just too awful to say.

I'm so glad that I feed the raw diet to my 2 fur faces. But this just makes my blood boil. I know folks who have lost their pets due to this and are devastated.
I have a friend who makes trips to a butcher to get meat with bones. She then grinds them up (raw) and freezes the lot in daily measures. When it comes time to feed the dogs, she mixes in pureed vegetables and puts it in a kong and the dogs eat it.

You said it, tkathy. That goes double for people food, if its mentioned on the labels. (I'm not convinced it is all the time.) I can only wonder if the terrorists have taken note of just how easy it is to poison a large part of society before anyone figures out what's gone wrong. Between the ecoli and the pet food scandals, it makes me think we're easy pickin's for anyone who wants to do harm.
Not if the cats are males. Most male cats should avoid fish, even people fish, because of the high ash content. (Or so my vets have told me over the years.)
The few bucks these companies saved by going to China will be nothing compared to their losses.

The few Blue Seal feeds that do include wheat gluten [both pet and livestock] get the gluten from an American company in Michigan.
Right now, I'm sticking with them.
I never feed canned dog food.
I make my own "kibble topping" from grocery store meats.
Yes, especially my cat's favorite in a packet called Cluck-A-Doodle-Doo (by Meow Mix). He's a three month old orange and white kitten.
Nope, that wasn't my thought. It's certainly possible,but it would have required more coordination.
At any rate, I am hoping that everyone with pets will catch this right away to avoid more injuries to their furry friends.
