Ahmadinejad Vows News Soon on Atomic Work

Iran's president promised on Sunday Iranians would soon hear more news about the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, which the West believes is a covert effort to build atomic bombs despite Tehran's denials.

"The Iranian nation will soon hear fresh news about our country's nuclear transition," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

He did not give details about any announcements or when the news would be released but Ahmadinejad is due to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

BAGHDAD - Coalition Forces further disrupted terrorist cells using improvised explosive devices Friday morning when eight terrorists were killed and 41 suspected terrorists were detained during operations around Iraq.

Near Mahmudiyah, Coalition Forces detained eight suspected terrorists.
Another raid uncovered a building containing seven tanks of chlorine, which Coalition Forces destroyed.

Seven armed terrorists were killed after they fired upon Coalition Forces entering a building. Forces on the scene detained 15 suspected terrorists who are allegedly tied to al-Qaeda in Iraq.

One armed terrorist was killed when Coalition Forces entered a building in Baghdad to conduct an operation to disrupt the Baghdad vehicle-borne IED network. Six suspected terrorists were detained, and Coalition Forces found VBIED components in the building.

Another operation in Baghdad netted two individuals with suspected ties to the Baghdad IED network. Near Mosul, Coalition Forces detained 10 suspected terrorists in two separate operations to disrupt the al-Qaeda network in northern Iraq.

“Terrorists continue to endanger the Iraqi people and security forces by using explosives, and we will continue to disrupt their networks across the country,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson.

I don’t buy their produce, when I asked the guy in that department to read the label on apples for me, he did and said they’re from Canada. I said isn’t there anything from this country? He gave me the global product mantra, how it keeps everything cheaper. I told him my health was not for sale!!!

A second hostage, a woman, survived with no injuries, but she had been bound with duct tape. She was being examined by HFD workers.

Houston Police said the gunman apparently shot himself in the head about 5 p.m. today.

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones sent letters Thursday to Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and State Rep. Courtney Combs calling for mandatory armed personnel in all public and private Ohio schools.

Jones said his plan is intended to prevent a school shooting such as the one this week at Virginia Tech.

Jones suggested assigning law enforcement officers to each school or training select school officials to handle weapons and enforce laws, and commissioning those officials as Ohio Peace Officers.

Jones admitted his plan would likely be expensive and would not prevent school shootings, but he said armed personnel would limit the number of casualties in such an event.”

Snip: A city court yesterday remanded Bharatiya Janata Party MP Babubhai Katara to 11 days' police custody for questioning, a day after he was detained at the airport on charges of misusing the passports of his family to smuggle out a woman and a youth to Canada.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau remanded Katara after the police told her that the MP was suspected to have smuggled several people abroad on three occasions earlier on the diplomatic passports of his family members during his visits to the United States and Canada between 2002 and 2005.

Jihad obligatory for every Muslim

US: Heightened threat in Germany

Snip: U.S. diplomatic facilities have increased their security due to a 'heightened threat,' the U.S. Embassy in Berlin said Friday.

Robert Wood, a U.S. embassy spokesman, noted that German authorities had said Germany faces an increased threat of terrorism because its military takes part in missions in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

'U.S. diplomatic and consular facilities in Germany are increasing their security posture,' the embassy said in a statement. 'We are taking these steps in response to a heightened threat situation.'

Al-Qaeda seeks to expand its operations (Franchise Opportunity)

Al-Qaeda is reaching out from its base in Pakistan to turn militant Islamist groups in the Middle East and Africa into franchises charged with intensifying attacks on western targets, according to European officials and terrorism specialists.

The development could see radical groups use al-Qaeda expertise to switch their attention from local targets to western interests in their countries and abroad. “For al-Qaeda, this is a force multiplier,” said a British official who follows terrorism.

One of the first signs of the development was an announcement on September 11 last year by Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda’s number two, of a “merger” between al-Qaeda in the Maghreb and Algeria’s Salafist Group for Call and Combat, known by its French initials, GSPC.

Western officials expect to see a similar merger be tween al-Qaeda and the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, a mainly exiled organisation devoted until now to the overthrow of Muammer Gadaffi, the Libyan leader.

They say there are signs that similar moves are under way in Lebanon, Syria and East Africa and that there is an effort to unite militant groups across north Africa.

The Algerian “merger” was followed by a series of attacks, culminating in two suicide bombings last week that killed 33 and wounded 220. It is too early to say whether last week’s attacks were influenced by al-Qaeda central, officials said. The targeting – including of the prime minister’s residence – was ambitious but traditional for the GSPC, analysts said. However, before these latest attacks, Algeria had suffered only one suicide bomb.

The effort by al-Qaeda to reach out to radical Islamist groups, which is still at an early stage, follows the rebuilding of al-Qaeda’s core in the lawless tribal areas of Pakistan, near the Afghan border. Al-Qaeda was severely disrupted by US-led military action after its 2001 attacks on the US. But the central organisation appears to have reconstituted around about 20 senior figures in farms and compounds that also act as training camps, western officials say.

“AQ Central” has sophisticated target planners and expertise in poisons and explosives probably unavailable to local groups, officials say.

The Algerian group operates small training camps in northern Mali, attracting fighters from Algeria, Mauritania, Niger, Mali and Nigeria. UK officials say there is concern about the prospect of trained Nigerian jihadis entering the country among thousands of Nigerians who travel weekly to and from the UK.

According to Andrew Black, of the US Jamestown Institute, the training would equip jihadis for Iraq, from which they would return to the Maghreb with operational experience.
