Md. GOP pushes for veto of 4 bills (More Liberal insanity in Maryland)
Baltimore Sun ^ | April 5, 2007 | Andrew A. Green

Saying the Maryland General Assembly has swung too far to the left, Republican leaders called on Gov. Martin O'Malley yesterday to veto four bills if they get to his desk, including measures that would provide in-state tuition to illegal immigrants and voting rights to felons.

"We hear in our communities, 'What are they doing down there?'" said Del. Anthony J. O'Donnell, the minority leader from Southern Maryland. "They're giving in-state tuition to illegal immigrants? Accelerating parole to repeat drug offenders? Giving the right to vote to offenders, including those who have committed treason against the United States? Giving Maryland's electoral votes to a candidate who was not supported by the majority of Marylanders?"

On a proposal to provide tuition for illegal immigrants, O'Malley has said it is a waste for the state to pay for the K-12 education of the children of illegal immigrants - which is required by law - and then deny them the chance to fulfill their potential. He supports restoring voting rights for felons who've completed their sentences so that these individuals can fully re-integrate into society, and backs possible parole for second-time drug offenders so that the system has more flexibility than mandatory minimum sentences allow.

And he has said that signing on to an interstate compact to award electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote would ensure that the votes of people in every state count equally.

Republicans said they think Democratic lawmakers are misreading the results of the 2006 election. The state faces serious problems, most notably a projected budget shortfall of more than $1.3 billion next year, but the legislature and governor have chosen to back initiatives that are anathema to a large portion of the state, said Del. Christopher B. Shank, the House minority whip from Western Maryland.

As predicted, O’Malley is well on his way to doing to Maryland as a whole what he did to Baltimore.

"We hear in our communities, 'What are they doing down there?'"

They're doing exactly what you voted them into office to do.

MD is a stinking hell hole. For a few years we used to say, “You have a good govenor there”, but now we just laugh at them again.

If I recall correctly, I remember reading some Maryland Freeper comments which stated some "conservatives" in this state would not bother voting for Ehrlich because he wasn't "conservative enough."

I hope those people are happy.

I've said it before, I will say it again. This is Maryland, not Texas or Utah. The Democrat party has a 2-1 registration edge over the Republican party in this state. There is simply no way for a Republican to win in this state without appealing to a fair number of Democrats. If someone wants a conservative state government, they are not going to find it here.

I also live in The People’s Republic of Maryland. Unfortunately, a lot of people are “old time” democrats but they are too ignorant and stubborn to actually see what is going on now. A lot of people remember the “good old union days” and continue to blame the companies for the demise of the state rather than the greed that took over. The unions put themselves out of work. The public schools are a mess and the people just refuse to deal with it and put their kids in private schools. Every time a good solution is brought to the table, the activist shut it down. I live here out of necessity - not choice. Hopefully, things will change as the old union people die out, but with the Demo-rats giving it all away to the illegals aliens and convicts, they probably will continue to suck the life out of this state.

I moved from the suburbs of Balt/DC to the hills of Western Maryland. I’m isolated from that rat pack of socialist legislators down there. It is a hell hole.

It was nice to see Bill Oreilly go after that loser Valario, hope to see some follow up on that.

O’Malley to veto bills that include government giveaways and put the interests of non-citizens ahead of citizens, and the interests of parasites ahead of the interests of taxpayers? As the first President Bush would have said, not gonna happen? The State of Maryland is now a wholly owned subsidiary of CASA.

I can understand Baltimore voting for democrats as they have a natural base there in the very poor with large numbers of felons and illegals. But the very rich, once Republican, Howard County voted for Kerry in 04 and for all Democrats in 06. Already the new democrat county exec says he will raise taxes yet once again for a record budget ,and a key program is tax payer paid affordable housing, as he makes our housing more expensive with more taxes.

HELP!!!!

You can blame that on the liberals spreading their virus to the rest of the state. These people are the same ones who made traditionally Democrat-leaning parts of Maryland into high-tax and even high-crime places. Now that they have ruined those places and don't want to live there anymore, they move to the "unspoiled" parts of the state and start to ruin things here too. I am in Frederick County and I know the same is coming for us as well.

I live in Maryland ,and I worked hard for Ehrlich and for Steele . The fact is that the National Republican party wrote us off. Our own republican party was almost as bad, they didnt even put up a candidate against Steny Hoyer.I had to vote for the Green party guy,I cant even remember his name.

Our greatest problem is Montgomery County ,where all the liberals gather to get outside of DC. They ran from the city but they brought their liberal crap with them. Prince Georges County is where all the refugee blacks came when crime ran them from DC and affirmative action Gubmint jobs gave them money enough to afford the big houses they bought in the suburbs, but they also brought their liberal crap with them. Baltimore City is mostly black and Democrat ,these three places are so populated that their votes overwhelm the rest of the state, and we end up with democrats who cater to liberals and blacks making the choices for the rest of us.

Look at the issues in this thread. In-State tuition for illegals immigrants-voting right for felons. What race has the largest percent of felons and what party will those felons vote for? The destruction of the electoral college, Only the Dimmicrats want that. O’Malley wants to do away with the death penalty.

Yes: The Democrats own this state and they are driving it into the ground, but it isnt what we deserve. We are trying and we are growing, but its a long tough road especially when we have all those Gubmint benefactors of Democrat initiatives moving in on us all the time from DC.

What is amazing in MD is the two sets of liberals, one is the traditional poor masses trapped in Baltimore but the other is the highly educated (post bachelors) highly paid, technical worker who sees the democratic party and government services as the shining light of reason. The reason may be that they all work on government contracts and Democrats give lip service to their importance.

The less educated (bachelors graduates) less rich Anne Arundel County voted for Bush in 04.

In am in Harford County (north of Balt City), and we voted for Ehrlich by a large amount over O’Malley. The eastern shore, Harford & Carroll Counties are always putting up with the liberal crap from Balt City, PG, Montgomery, and now AA Counties.

IMO O’Malley is just an idiot,a figurehead, the real danger is Mike Miller.

My county went for Bush also ,St. Mary’s. We also went to Ehrlich in 2006.

We worked hard ,but its hard when you have the populous counties run by liberals, and no help from national republicans.
