Christoper Miles: Why I'm Voting for Rudy Guiliani
Tampa Bay Online ^ | 4/6/07 | Chris Miles

Posted on 04/07/2007 2:30:04 PM PDT by meg88

Rudy Giuliani is the best presidential candidate.

On Thursday, April 5, there were two articles in the opinion section that led me to this conclusion. One was "Rudy would kill pro-life movement" written by Doug Patton and the other, "A New Yorker Remembers Rudy" written by Ted Rall.

Patton represents the religious right movement that has taken over the Republican Party. Within his article, he even commends Rudy Giuliani as a candidate. However he is ready to jettison a candidate on one issue only. Patton equates conservatism to pro-life. I would say that anyone who wants to have government tell others how to live by their religious standards is not conservative at all.

From Rudy's website: "Rudy Giuliani supports reasonable restrictions on abortion such as parental notification with a judicial bypass and a ban on partial birth abortion -- except when the life of the mother is at stake. He's proud that adoptions increased 66 percent while abortions decreased over 16 percent in New York City when he was mayor. But Rudy understands that this is a deeply personal moral dilemma, and people of good conscience can disagree respectfully. Ultimately he believes that it is a decision between a woman, her doctor, her family and her God.

Ted Rall is as far left as you can get. His article is spent on Rudy Giuliani's performance during and after 9/11 and his personality. He also chastises him for running off panhandlers. It is his opinion. He never mentions performance in other areas such as when Rudy restored fiscal discipline by controlling spending and cutting wasteful programs. He cut the size of city-funded government bureaucracy by nearly 20 percent -- excluding the number of cops on the street and teachers in the classroom.

He cut taxes 23 times in New York and turned a $2.3 billion budget deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus, while balancing the city's budget. He put more cops on the street and more criminals in jail. He cut crime in half and reduced murders by two-thirds during his time as mayor. He accomplished this as a Republican mayor with a Democratic city council. Could a "self sabotaging, thin skinned bully" deliver these results?

The extreme right and left in politics dislike him as a candidate. To me, this is the best reason to vote for him.

And by the way. A family member of mine who signed up on FR last month, just got banned or suspended tonight after trying to post a couple of pro-Giuliani messages on this thread. Is this what FR has become?
I guess I’ll be next.

But you know I’m right about Ronald Reagan.

No, you just think it's issue one.

"Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step over the ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! -- All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a Thousand years. At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide." - Abraham Lincoln

No, it is issue one.

If we surrender on the war on terror, America is gone. We may already be on our way.

It’s come to my attention tonight that some new Freepers who happen to support Rudy Giuliani are being suspended or banned. One tried to post on this very thread tonight and was immediately suspended. I didn’t think this was the way “conservatives” were supposed to operate, by silencing other conservatives with whom they disagree.

That's strange. I scrolled back looking for a single zotted post on this thread and couldn't find one.

Can you tell us the numbers of the zotted posts?

No I don't. It is easy for me to think that the Gipper would refrain from campaigning in the general if Rudy were the nominee.

Why would conservatives support Rudy?

Simple. Sometimes it makes sense to vote for a liberal like JFK or Truman to keep a McGovern, a Kerry, or a Dean out of power. When you’re being threatened by madmen who want to suicide themselves with nuclear bombs for religious reasons, it makes absolute sense.

If the Rudy-bashers had a more conservative candidate they supported that could defeat Hillary, then sign me up.

Duncan Hunter is liberal on economics, and generally is an unpleasant person. Fred Thompson doesn’t seem that serious about the entire campaigning business. McCain, well, is McCain, and Romney flipflops and panders.

If I had to switch support from Giuliani at this point, I’d pick Romney. I’m not totally convinced Romney can win. However, he can raise the money, has a large fortune of his own, which may help him overcome his deficits in the polls to the Dems. It is still risky — the polls show Obama and Clinton defeating Romney easily.

As a result, given the lack of serious argument above, I’m tentatively staying with Giuliani. If something develops— if Thompson jumps in and shows appeal with independents, or if Romney can persuade people to join his side—then maybe I’ll consider switching.

Spam away with the dorky images all you want. Let me know when you guys have a rational argument.

See, that's what people like you can't understand, professor.

America's internal moral strength, and her standing with the Lord God Almighty, is the only protection she has against external threats.

"Unless the LORD builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the LORD guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain."

Lord God almighty will not prevent your wife or daughter from being forced to wear a burka.

Lord God almighty will not lift a finger to stop those who would oppress us, not if we don’t.

You sound like the guy who was drowning and refused all help, saying “God’s gonna rescue me!” He drowned.

BS.

It’s just that all the effort you can possibly expend won’t do you any good if God withdraws His protective Hand.

You seem to think you can make terrorists flee in battle with prayer.

Why can you, let us say, pray and make the terrorists stop killing our servicemen in Iraq? I know you can do it, EternalVigilance.

Yeah. And I think I'm in pretty good company in that belief.

Nor has Rudy “embraced the Clinton regime”

Really?

"Most of [President] Clinton's policies are very similar to most of mine."
--Rudolph Giuliani, New York Post, Jun 8, 1999 (restating RWG quote from 1996 )
"I don't think tonight's result is tragic, I guess because I'm not that partisan a person ... I think President Clinton is a good man, he's a very decent man, and the country has run pretty well."
--Rudolph Giuliani, commenting on Bob Dole's loss in the 1996 presidential election.
New York Times, Nov 7, 1996

I can hear Bush saying the very same thing about Clinton. It’s political rhetoric.

EternalVigilance—

Note that the people praying above are military personnel. Prayer alone, like diplomacy, cannot win a military engagement. We send people into battle with guns, not Bibles.

I can’t tell who is more loony these days— the moonbats, or the wingnuts.

I agree with you.

Cept I don’t thik it will be Hillary. It’s gonna be Gore.
Hillary and Obama are unelectable. She is too unlikable and he has no experience.

Gore will step in and be formidable he would bridge the moonbat and rank and file dims. I just heard on talk radio he’s favored in Vegas....I have no links to verify. I’m not sure Gulliani or Thompson can beat Gore.

Romney could match up well against him.

Again, you show yourself incapable of seeing what the founders of this country called “self-evident.” If you could, you’d know that enemies of life and liberty like Giuliani aren’t fit for any office, much less the highest office in the land.
