I hope the Freepers who put their hatred of Imus above the 1st Amendment, sleep well tonight.

THANK YOU, WORTH REPEATING

Will some of you PLEASE read and understand the First Amendment? It has nothing to do with this case.

Hint: The amendment starts out "Congress shall make no law..." He wasn't banned from the airwaves by Congress people.

It’s still the employer’s right to fire an employee for something the employee says on the job. The employer gets to make that judgment.

"Time for Imus to shut down his phony ranch and retire."

I don't see 'hatred of free speech' anywhere in this post....

Let's recap:
1. Imus is a jerk.
2. His ranch/home based charity is being investigated.
3. He should have been pulled long ago based on lack of talent and socialization.
4. He has been given a pass by the left, presumably because he generally beats up on conservatives.
5. Nevertheless, he has never avoided racist comments.
6. Free speech HAS taken a hit but the man's employer DOES have every right to fire him.
7. Major issue is that this LOOKS like Obamasama and the book-end reverends won out - if only because of the timing.
8. Yes, rosie should be next but she won't be next (unless she 'resigns' on her own following some back room negotiations).
9. Yes, Rush was fired for far less and conservatives in general are held to different criteria.
10. Yes, the motive for firing was loss of sponsorship regardless of WHAT partisan observers might prefer to believe.

I could go on but my main point is that this was OK as business but it sucks culturally and politically in many ways. To many of us it is marginally comforting in other ways - like seeing Imus brought up short.

Just maybe we should stop treating each other like having a slightly different perspective is tantamount to drowning puppies.

The coach from Rutgers is on MSNBC now...said that Imus’ remark has “hurt recruiting”!!!

Well, this could be true, considering the speaking ability of those college-level girls.

They did not exactly promote their school's educational prowess.

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,br> and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

There you go Nit, looks like your TV gig is history. And all for calling Jim Tressel "Cheatypants McSweatervest".

All that time, and I had no idea sweatervest wearers were a protected class. Oh well...maybe I can head to XM.

MSNBC, no doubt, was flooded with angry calls by all seven of their viewers.

This could have involved the government. The FCC started an investigation and MSNBC may have caved because of it.

Nice try, teach.

This is soooooo wrong! Freedom of speech. Where is she?

Hasn't moved an inch. Imus has the right so say anything he wants. MSNBC has the same right not to carry it.

Today an employer fired an employee who had become a liability. That's a perfectly legitimate action, no matter how melodramatic some may act.

Ah, but should we ignore the reason WHY Imus BECAME a liability in the first place? Personally, I don't think so.

It wasn't the FCC that caused this. GE dropped the hammer on MSNBC, because advertisers were bailing.

Nonsense. The FCC is investigating whether federal regulations were violated - that is their proper role. In this case, Imus was canned because advertisers pulled their support. Nothing more to it than that.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech

I don't see the part of the First Amendment that prohibits MSNBC from firing Imus for saying something stupid on their channel.

Anyone still think that there is “freedom of speech” in the USA?
