1994 Rudy: "I will work as hard to protect someone's right to believe in God as he or she sees fit -- or not to believe in God."
The Brody File has dug up a Rudy quote from the past that makes for an interesting discussion. In a 1994 New York Times article, Rudy said this:
"As the Mayor of New York City, I will work as hard to protect someone's right to believe in God as he or she sees fit -- or not to believe in God -- because I realize that my right to practice my religion depends completely on my commitment to defend someone else's right to practice theirs, or to practice no religion at all."
The article goes on to mention his views on Catholicism.
"Mr. Giuliani, who as a young man once considered joining the priesthood, noted that many Catholics today "feel that in some intellectual or quasi-intellectual circles, they are demeaned." He said he had also heard Catholics say that "Catholic-bashing has become part of the dogma of what they regard as the politically correct." And he said: "Indeed, I do detect among some who accept the most recent intellectual fads a disdain for those who share in the more orthodox faiths, whether Christian or Jewish or Muslim. In my humble opinion -- and this is meant as an observation, not a challenge -- that disdain emerges from an almost subconscious conclusion that to believe in God too fervently betrays a certain intellectual infirmity." He compared such a view with the "difficult time that some believers have in drawing the line between belief in dogma and respect for those who disagree." He called for believers and unbelievers alike to avoid "the arrogance of having no doubts."
Read the rest of the article here. It's interesting to hear Rudy talk about his faith. Clearly, there is a deeper story there. It makes me wonder what his upbringing was like and how his Catholic faith helped shaped who he is today. It's something worth exploring. I interview Giuliani next week. I took him to mean he thought you were implying there was some connection between the statement we were discussing and the statement you asked about.

I don’t consider abortion an issue for the presidency. That has always been the case with me.
They're one of the most prominent Pro-Abortion organizations in the United States. If they support someone, then that should raise eyebrows. If their support for someone is 100%, that should raise some warning flags.
You guys seem to know alot about them.

Shhhhhh.... I have a feeling that a lot of these people would gladly give up the War against terrorists, allowing them to take over, if it mean Abortion would be completely and totally outlawed. And women put back “in their place” and...

One’s stance on abortion can be telling about a few things.
Consider: Rudy thinks poor women have a Constitutional right to taxpayer-funded abortion.
From that one statement, we can deduce:
1) His perception of Constitutional rights is very out of wack.
2) He undermines his own “fiscal conservative” label by advocating tax-payer funded abortion.
3) He has an “interesting” code of ethics, to say the least.
Maybe we need an RDS Telethon. If Jerry Lewis ain’t busy, maybe he’d host it. ;)
It’s becoming rather comical how hysterical the Rudy Rooters get over straightforward FACTS.
Now, I understand it must get very frustrating to promote a hard-core liberal on a conservative forum, but did they really expect conservatives to just roll-over?

All "fiscal conservative" really means is that you would prefer to not run a deficit, it has nothing to do with curtailing spending. I have yet to see Rudy out there campaigning for a tax cut.

That would be ideal. However, since, unfortunately legalized abortion is the law of the land, and not something a president can just do away with, the abortion fight is more apporpriate for the courts. So, I’m picking my battle - and my top priority right now is the survival of this nation.
Making abortion illegal is all fine and good, but totally useless if we have no country left.
But that’s just this man’s opinion.
