Thread 4

Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, our nation has fought a global war against violent extremists who use terrorism as their weapon of choice, and who seek to destroy our free way of life. Our enemies seek weapons of mass destruction and, if they are successful, will likely attempt to use them in their conflict with free people everywhere. Currently, the struggle is centered in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we will need to be prepared and arranged to successfully defend our nation and its interests around the globe for years to come. DOD

Our enemies include all the Muslims who dream of knocking Western Civilization off its perch atop humanity’s dung heap. Islam is fractured into any number of sects, tribes and ethnic groups, but the dream of destroying us cuts across all the fault lines. Islamic terrorists are merely the tip of a very large spear.

J. Peter Mulhern, the American Thinker, September 18

The determination behind that fight is real, the hatred is real, and the excuses for doing this are very real in the minds of those who have decided to walk that path. We can respond in two ways: Try to ignore or negotiate with people who do not want to negotiate in good faith, because what they want is our destruction, or to stand up against the darkness of those who see all of us, our way of life, our culture and our aspirations as something worth eliminating.

Either: "And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Or: "With vigilance, determination, courage, we will defeat the enemies of freedom, and we will leave behind a more peaceful world for our children and our grandchildren." GW Bush.

Here's where I will post news and info about the Long War. Let me know if you're interested.

Things are in the balance. I enjoyed AJ’s post so I am bringing it over here.

The War Front In Diyala
Posted by AJStrata on May 6th, 2007

Those of us watching Iraq know the last battle will be in Diyala. So does al Qaeda. And just as the Battle of the Bulge in WWII was a last desperate push by the Nazi to try and avoid their final defeat, it is no surprise al Qaeda will try the same thing to try and break the will of the US and Iraqi forces:

Roadside bombs killed eight American soldiers in three attacks Sunday in Diyala province and Baghdad, and a car bomb claimed 30 lives in a wholesale food market in a part of the Iraqi capital where sectarian tensions are on the rise.

This IS NOT sectarian violence - it is the jihadists attacking the moderate Muslims. It is the civil war we need so Muslims decide whether they are going to be for peace or bloody annihilation. We will see these days. But we will also see more days where we nail al Qaeda - as long as the Surrendercrats don’t get a chance to hand Bin Laden his win.

Sometimes I think there are very few of us watching, very few who will do some work to try to understand what’s going on, and that just amazes me. I hear such amazing statements from elected officials. Like Chris Dodd today saying al-Qaida was in Afganistan, not Iraq where it’s just a civil war. Even when it’s life and death, they don’t tell the truth. Do they tell the truth to themselves?

Okay, let’s see if Condi and the State Department can do something to reverse this.

IRAN: Surging consumer prices spark concern
Monday Morning, Lebanon ^ | Sunday May, 06 - 2007 | Staff

A combination of expansionary economic policies, American pressure on the banking system and high money supply growth is fuelling price rises in staple goods in Iran and hitting the lowest classes hardest. The research center run by the conservative-dominated Parliament announced recently that inflation reached 22.4 percent in the last Iranian year, which ended on March 20, well above the official estimate of 13.5 percent. A group of 20 MPs then published an open statement protesting against the “uncontrolled and unwarranted rise in prices of foodstuffs, hygiene products and consumer goods”. “Officials have to do something against unemployment and the unbridled rise in prices as a matter of urgency”, said one MP, Asghar Gheranmayeh. According to Parliament’s research center, the price rises look set to continue in the current Iranian year, with inflation set to hit 24 percent. Money supply growth — a key indication of future price trends — is seen at a colossal 42 percent. “There is no control on prices. Beauty products are up by 35 percent wholesale. The price of cooking oils has also gone up by 35 percent”, said one shopkeeper who declined to be named. Shopkeepers used the recent New Year holiday period to raise their prices when people returned from the break, with the price of fruit going up by 21.6 percent in the space of a week. “A big bottle of Coke has climbed to 7,500 rials from 6,000 and the orange juice that I buy has doubled in price. My hairdresser has also raised his prices by 40 percent”, complained one Iranian consumer. The central bank has also issued a new high-denomination 50,000-rial note (about five dollars) in a move that appears linked to the rising prices, although the authorities deny any connection with inflation.

John Edwards will take care of this.

Just keep repeating, there is no threat.

Morocco breaks up al Qaeda recruiting gang
Reuters ^ | 5/6/07

RABAT (Reuters) - Moroccan security forces broke up a network helping to recruit fighters for al Qaeda’s North African branch and arrested around 20 people overnight in several towns across the country, a government official said on Sunday.

The gang was involved in sending volunteers to training camps run by the Algerian-based al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb, formerly known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), the official said, confirming an earlier report by state news agency MAP.

“The operation ... allowed the arrest of around 20 people in several towns across the kingdom,” MAP said. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined to give more details.

Morocco, a staunch U.S. ally, says it has broken up more than 50 militant Islamist cells, some linked to al Qaeda, and arrested more than 3,000 people since suicide bombings in the country’s economic capital Casablanca in 2003.

Four years of calm were broken this year when six Islamists blew themselves up in the course of a month in Casablanca, killing one other person. On April 11, triple suicide bombings in the capital of neighbouring Algeria killed 33 people.

The attacks have deepened fears of a broad upsurge in violence across the region after the GSPC changed its name with the goal of fusing similar Islamist groups in the region and using it as a base for attacks on European targets.

Morocco’s government has pledged a war without respite on violent Islamist groups after the latest attacks.

Local human rights groups say the authorities abuse the rights of many people arrested under anti-terrorism laws, submitting them to unfair trials and ill-treatment. The government denies any such abuse.

” It’s a good day and God loves me so nobody else has to “

Good morning, WB!!

Neat sentiment, which I’ll counter with a quote from an old friend — “I love you all, and there ain’t a damned thing you can do about it.” ;~)

Trying to decide whether to pop in to Jedward’s new thread ( http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1829450/posts ) long enough to post a ‘pox on all their houses’ rant, or just keep my distance

(and my dignity, and, possibly, my FR membership..)

;~)

Morning Uncle Ike - “I love you all, and there ain’t a damned thing you can do about it.” ;~)

Thats what I like about you - always the pessimist - I like that quote also.

Reminds me of my dad kinda. One of his friends would say "have a nice day" and dad would say "don't tell me what kind of day to have". He didn't mean any harm - he has an odd sense of humor.
