Thread 4

Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, our nation has fought a global war against violent extremists who use terrorism as their weapon of choice, and who seek to destroy our free way of life. Our enemies seek weapons of mass destruction and, if they are successful, will likely attempt to use them in their conflict with free people everywhere. Currently, the struggle is centered in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we will need to be prepared and arranged to successfully defend our nation and its interests around the globe for years to come. DOD

Our enemies include all the Muslims who dream of knocking Western Civilization off its perch atop humanity’s dung heap. Islam is fractured into any number of sects, tribes and ethnic groups, but the dream of destroying us cuts across all the fault lines. Islamic terrorists are merely the tip of a very large spear.

J. Peter Mulhern, the American Thinker, September 18

The determination behind that fight is real, the hatred is real, and the excuses for doing this are very real in the minds of those who have decided to walk that path. We can respond in two ways: Try to ignore or negotiate with people who do not want to negotiate in good faith, because what they want is our destruction, or to stand up against the darkness of those who see all of us, our way of life, our culture and our aspirations as something worth eliminating.

Either: "And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Or: "With vigilance, determination, courage, we will defeat the enemies of freedom, and we will leave behind a more peaceful world for our children and our grandchildren." GW Bush.

Here's where I will post news and info about the Long War. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanx BahBah - I thought the old one, though direct, may have been a little vulgar.

Moscow is still trying to work out the whole combo-state thing with Belarus of course for their own benefit but I don’t know what to think either. I’ll check in later.

TRIPOLI, Lebanon (AP) U.N. relief official reports that a convoy of supplies was hit in renewed fighting in Palestinian refugee camp.

If history is our guide, the UN will promptly decamp from Lebanon.

Russia condemns Israeli attacks
presstv.ir ^ | May 2007

Posted on 05/22/2007 12:59:24 PM CDT by Tailgunner Joe

Russia has condemned ‘Israel’s excessive use of force’ in attacks against Palestinians and the bombing of civilian areas in the Gaza Strip.

“Israel opens fire against residential areas in Palestinian towns, killing civilians, which is in our view excessive and disproportionate,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said in a statement.

Israeli air strikes on Gaza, which resumed last week for the first time in six months, have so far killed 23 Palestinians.

Israeli cabinet has also given the regime’s military a green light to resume targeted assassination of Palestinian activists.

Just woke up and turned on FNC —

Reporting that one of the missing soldiers has been found dead.

Just caught the end of the report, and that’s all the detail I have, for now....

I’m not particularly shocked, as the word from military spokespersons over the past few days has been that “at least two of the missing soldiers are still alive”.

Need more coffee.....

Iraq - Iraqi police: Body of missing US soldier found in river

Excerpt -

HILLA, Iraq, May 23 (Reuters) - The half-naked body of one of three missing U.S. soldiers was found on Wednesday in the Euphrates River in the town of Mussayab south of Baghdad, police said.
The U.S. military said it was investigating reports that a body had been found in a canal in the area.

Hilla police spokesman Captain Muthanna al-Maamouri said there were bullet wounds to the torso and head of the body, which was wearing U.S. Army-issue pants and boots and had a tattoo on the left arm.

Good morning, Bahbah...

No, not very good news to wake up to.... “Closure” (regardless of what the Liberal Whiners say) is a poor substitute for good news....

Just heard a FNC live spot a second ago, saying that the body had been identified, but the name would not be released pending notification of next-of-kin...

(Then, in the next sentence, the reporterette said that US Military wasn’t ‘confirming’ anything yet.... Go figure...)

Iran urges timetable for US withdrawal from Iraq
IranMania (Iranian Embassy in London) ^ | 23MAY07 | IranMania

Posted on 05/23/2007 4:05:16 AM CDT by familyop

LONDON, May 23 (IranMania) - Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini emphasized the need for the US to present a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, IRNA reported.

Hosseini made the remarks in an interview with Austrian daily `Der Standard’ on upcoming talks at ambassadorial level between Iran and the US on Iraq security, slated to be held on June 28.

Asked about Iran’s expectations from Iran-US talks on Baghdad, he said, “We will hold the meeting because we regard ourselves as duty-bound to remind the occupying forces of the necessity to correct their performance.

“Occupiers of Iraq should know that the time is ripe for them to give more power to the Iraqi people and leave them free to determine their own fate.”

Mike Yon on the battles fought and won by the Brits in Iraq and then lost by the media:

...As the British increase their forces in Afghanistan, they are drawing down in Iraq. Although the drawdown in Iraq is based on pragmatism, the enemy apparently is attempting to create the perception of a military rout. So while the British reduce their forces in southern Iraq, they are coming under heavier fire and the enemy makes claims of driving “the occupiers” out.

In reality, the Brits were about to transfer authority over the Maysan Province to the Iraqi government. Thus, the day’s purpose, although seemingly more ceremonial in nature, was to counterpunch in the perception war, by focusing on the progress being made by the Iraqi Security Forces in the region. Some of the biggest battles in Iraq today are being fought not with bombs and bullets, but with cameras and keyboards. For whatever reasons—and there are many—today, when Western media is most needed here, it’s nearly gone...

It’s one of Mike’s best posts this year - it includes combat, evasive maneuvers, politicians, generals, one reporter from the LA Times, links to great posts, and General Petraeus’ PhD dissertation... Be sure to check it out.

From a friend and NCO in Afghanistan, comes this email. His team has had to fight and kill more than a few Al Qaeda trained Taliban insurgents.

...We have many Taliban acronyms; AGE, ACM, or OMF. I just call them DAI’s (Dumb-Ass Insurgents). The men that are convincing these men to come here to fight me and the government forces of Afghanistan should be ashamed of what they are doing. The death of the young men we kill rests directly on the shoulders of these evil men and that alone should be enough to reserve the demented leaders of their misguided cause a room in Hell. They poison them against the cause of freedom for the people of Afghanistan. I just don’t get it. I suppose I never will.

Because I get the news from all over the world here on my firebase, I see that, once more, the successes of what we are doing (establishing the government, helping the people when we can etc.) escapes the Mainstream Media and the loonies from places like MoveOn.org and Daily Kos. I am in touch with people from USAID and some other NGOs who are attempting to build a road in our area that would link one of the towns in our area that is a Taliban stronghold to the district center and the center of the commerce in our area. I have gotten a bid from a contractor, who we know in the area, and when the new guys get here, they will get to see the project through.

Evidently, it also eludes the likes of Nancy Pelosi and John Murtha, who seem to think the “real” war on terror is only here in Afghanistan. I’ve got a news flash for those two morons; the War on Terror is wherever Al-Qaeda is or the Taliban hang out. When they try to move against American interests, we are going to be there waiting for them...

There’s a lot more but I’m waiting for permission to post the rest.
