Killer's Note: 'You Caused Me to Do This'
ABC News ^ | 4/17/07

Posted on 04/17/2007 9:51:27 AM PDT by areafiftyone

April 17, 2007 — Cho Seung-Hui, the 23-year-old student who killed 32 people and then himself yesterday, left a long and "disturbing" note in his dorm room at Virginia Tech, say law enforcement sources.

Sources have now described the note, which runs several pages, as beginning in the present tense and then shifting to the past tense. It contains rhetoric explaining Cho's actions and says, "You caused me to do this," the sources told ABC News.

Sources say Cho killed two people in a dorm room, returned to his own dorm room where he re-armed and left the note, then went to a classroom building on the other side of campus. There, he killed 30 more people in four classrooms before shooting himself in the head.

Cho, born in South Korea, was a legal resident alien of the United States. He was a senior at Virginia Tech, majoring in English.

Sources tell ABC News Cho bought his first gun, a Glock 9 millimeter handgun, on March 13; they say he bought his second weapon, a .22 caliber pistol, within the last week. The serial numbers on both guns had been filed off, they said.

Authorities found the receipt for the 9 millimeter handgun in his backpack. They say it also contained two knives and additional ammunition for the two guns.

Legal permanent resident aliens may purchase firearms in the state of Virginia. A resident alien must, however, provide additional identification to prove he or she is a resident of the state.

Sections of chain similar to those used to lock the main doors at Norris Hall, the site of the second shooting that left 31 dead, were also found inside a Virginia Tech dormitory, sources confirmed to ABC News.

The media will get a hold of it somehow. They always manage to get a hold of stuff.

I found this on islamicity.com -

Ibrahim, Lot and Sarah started their long travel. They crossed Babylon, went through Syria and Palestine calling people to Allah, helping the poor and doing good deeds. By that time Ibrahim married Sarah. Their hope was to have children who would spread the Message of Allah after their death. As for Lot, he emigrated to the land of Sodom and settled there. Time went by and no children were born to Sarah. She realized she was sterile. She accepted her fate and submitted to the will of Allah. Ibrahim and Sarah moved to Egypt where the king gave Sarah a woman to be her servant. The woman's name was Hajar. Sarah was seeing Ibrahim' s hair getting white, and it grieved her to see his chance of having any child slipping away. She offered Hajar her servant as a wife to her husband, and prayed Allah to bless Hajar and Ibrahim with a child.
And so came Ismail, a baby boy born to Hajar. How unselfish Sarah was! For her, the need to have an offspring who would carry the Message after Ibrahim was greater than her pride. Fourteen years later Allah rewarded Sarah with a son, Ishaq in spite of her old age.

The filing off of the serial numbers tells me that he thought of killing the ex with the intent of getting away with it.

He could have, easily. He was able to roam around unmolested by law enforcement or security from 7:30 until he killed himself almost 8 hours later.

Law enforcement didn't even figure out what his name was until almost 24 hours later.

If his intent was to kill his girlfriend and escape, he could have hopped in a car at 7:30 and taken an international flight out of DC or even Atlanta before they even knew who they were looking for.

At the time he shot himself, he had yet to see or come in contact with a security guard or a policeman.

Correct. It makes no sense that someone who legally purchased weapons and planned on dying while using them would file down the serial numbers.

Agreed but maybe he wasn't planning on dying when he bought the guns and filed the serial numbers. Maybe he first planned on killing the girlfriend and getting away with it then changed his plans sometime between the purchase of the two guns and the execution of the crimes.

I have read in several news stories that he came here as a child with this parents and grew up in Northern Virginia; that he is a legal permanent resident.

He began “off”. There was too much planning involved for him to have just “gone off” *after* he executed the young woman & the advisor. People who kill uninterested love interests are off in the first place. Those they kill don’t make them kill.

There’s not much there—Ibrahim=Islamic Abraham, father of Ismail (Son of Hagar the Egyptian) and Isaac (Son of Sarah).

In this poorly lifted Talmudic myth that Mo HAM Ed bought from the Jews in Mecca to flesh out his lunatic rantings, Ibrahim destroys the idols in the Kaaba with an Ax(e).

Was looking for a reference to Ismial (sic) ax

See post 43.

I would add that it seems unlikely that he initially intended only to kill his girlfriend and then esacape.

He brought two weapons and enough ammunition to do exactly what he wound up doing - methodically killing dozens of people.

If he intended to pull a hit on his girlfriend and escape, he was not packing light for such a surgical mission.

Nor did he appear to have a vehicle handy to escape in.

I doubt he ever intended to survive the day.

Where in the world did you get the idea it was 8 hours between the first shooting and his suicide? Try ‘less than 3 hours’.

I wonder if the English major just had a course on Melville or American Ren Lit or something?

That may well be the case here, but we have no idea because they have said so little about the contents of the note.

In fact, what little they have said about the contents (the perp inveighing against the debauchery and the wealth of the students there and signing it “Ismail X” or some such) seems to rather cut the other way.

By the way, being a sick young man with problems and perpretrating an act for ideological reasons are not exclusive things.

The filing off of the serial numbers tells me that he thought of killing the ex with the intent of getting away with it. Between the filling off of the numbers and this spree, things obviously changed.

If he was behind the bomb threats, timing police response, he may have been planning to get away with it all.

I think Ismail Ax is a scrambled phrase. There are various descramblers on the net that break it into words, but I’m having trouble piecing it together.

I just said the same thing to a co-worker. We’ll get bits and pieces and the Ismail reference will ultimately be dismissed as a nod to “Moby Dick”. Maybe the Feds will even find a copy in his room (”Turner Diaries”, anyone?).

We’ve seen this movie before.

Not a good backup, unless the size was a factor. The .22 does not do much damage as a quick kill tool. I think he had some imaginative plan to stand over the victim and administer the kill shot while looking into their frightened eyes.

Just my attempt to perform a bit of psychoanalysis...or profile. The Glock was the ideal choice for a primary and is not subject to malfunction. If he were worried about that, He would have carried a second .30 cal. or a larger bore weapon. The cost likely was not a factor either, because you can buy either a small bore .22 or a .30 or .38 for about the same money.

Just speculation, but I sense he had some grandiose ideas about enjoying the moment.

Cho had a green card, which makes him a permanent resident.
