May point is that it looks like people are going way overboard trying to find a meaning to something that may have only meant something to him and has no real reference to something in reality.

In a normal world he would have been thrown out of the school long ago but in a PC world you just cant do that . People were probably afraid of getting sued or being called RACIST if they would have tried to throw this nut case out of school.

Last night I was flicking around the channels, and I saw Brian on MSNBC and he made the following statement: (I’m paraphrasing)

We made a copy before we turned it over to the FBI, afterall, we received it, we own it.

Pathetic, disgraceful, but oh-so-typical of the arrogant and ignorant lefty liberal media. The only reason they are airing it is for ratings; it has no value in the public domain. I cannot imagine the heartache the VT community was feeling before the airing of this outrageous video; upon seeing this, their heartache must be magnified many many times.

I’m disgusted with FNC and their coverage of this video as well. I don’t watch CNN so I have no clue how they are covering it, but again, I say NBC’s decision was based solely on ratings....they “advertised” the airing of the video to get a broader audience — that is all they care about, their bottom line.

I have read about all of this thread but skipped a bit in the middle. If someone has pointed this out already, I apologize.

Another explanation (which might apply because he was an English major) comes from the novel Moby Dick. Ishmael is the only character who survives the sinking of the ship, and is the narrator of the story. It's been decades since I read that book, but it was full of allusions to the Bible and I do remember that it was pointed out in the class that Ishmael was an outcast.

Based on a fact that their son attended Virginia Tech, their daughter is at Princeton, they own a dry cleaning business, and live in a 500k house.

It’s really not that much money. Not sure when you attended school, but I am a somewhat recent graduate (past 5 years) and I didn’t know anyone who couldn’t have gathered up $600 if needed. He had been planning for quite some time and could have saved up.

No idea if on a credit card, but neither do you. You wanted to know how it’s possible. Credit cards are given to any college student who wants one. Odds are that a 23 year old college student has one. If he wanted to spend money on it for a firearm, he certainly could have.

It is so obvious that he could have easily done this on his own, yet you want to ignore basic common sense to insinuate that he had help. That’s probably because you have NO COMMON SENSE and are a bit of a moron. Of course, me responding to such a fool doesn’t make me look very bright now that I think about it...

You are right, you will be shown to be a fool. Of course, I know your type. It won’t matter what the facts show, you will still profess that there was obviously some conspiracy. Get a grip.

IMO, a much more appropriate way for NBC to have handled this would be to have posted ALL of the videos, photos and text on their website without filtering it or spinning it for what they think the public needs to know (they could redact the names of living VaTech students or professors he refers to, if any) so that those who wish to analyze the a-hole's rantings in order to consider the influences that may have made an impression on his sick mind and what implications for public policy there might be to reduce the chances of future such crimes, etc., could do so; insofar as the NBC Evening News broadcast is concerned, I would NOT have shown the videos or quoted extensively from the rantings of the a-hole but referred briefly to the major themes with background stills of the a-hole, in order not to give a postmortem satisfaction to the a-hole by broadcasting extensive portions of his video or written messages to a mass audience.

Before broadcasting or posting anything, NBC News properly should have alerted the police investigators first, to give them a chance to object on the basis that disclosing some particular thing might jeopardize an ongoing investigation -- investigators may still be trying to determine if anyone else had any advance knowledge of the act or had knowingly assisted the a-hole in any way in preparing or obtaining things connected to the crime.

Something else I find tasteless, and perhaps I am the only one who does, is the way all of the TV news organizations develop a dramatic-sounding musical theme and slick graphics for each of these crises which they play as an introduction to a news report on the event. To my mind, the trite music and slick graphics tend somewhat to trivialize the event they are reporting.

No, you're not the only one. My husband says that the graphics and theme music are signs that this is an "important story" and that we are going to have to listen to every single detail whether we want to or not.

It seems to be reserved for "emotional" stories. You will note they never have theme music for the Congressional budget arguments or the State of the Union. I find it mawkish and unnecessary. I also think that it's amazing that the networks have someone on staff to develop these logos and theme music.

The "touching" theme music is an abomination. I watch almost no TV news of any kind.
