I just saw the slides on MSNBC’s site and Charles’ point about this having a set up reminiscent of the terrorist videos is reasonable.

The return address was A. Ishmael.

'Moby Dick' was on Turner Classic Movies Sunday night.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he was inspired by jihad videos, with all the talking they do of their victimhood, and their brotherhood cult crap.

The jihadists are portrayed as very tough and brave freedomfighters, who are revered by their family and friends.

And the worldwide press have for decades presented them as such, rarely do the press show revulsion or anger at their bombings of women and children. Instead they rationalize their murder as understandable and the fault of the US and Israel.

They present these goons as “winners”, as they do in Iraq to this day, (and some here do also).

Hasn’t any of the beheadings, stonings and vile murders of innocent Christians by Muslim nuts made any impact on you?

Don't lecture me about "Muslim nuts." You're jumping to conclusions about my words.

He’s projecting his guilt onto others so he can believe he’s innocent

He was an English

Just saw on the DC local news there was a formal ‘detention’ letter filed regarding him by authorities long enough for a DR to officially say he was mentally ill.

Well, according to the roommate, he had imaginary friends. Why not alter egos? Maybe A. Ishmael was either an “alter” (as in Dissociative Disorder formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) or some fantasy name he had for himself?

The package may have been mailed Saturday. Most post marks are from the Bulk Mail Centers. If he mailed from the Campus Post Office, it could have born a VT stamp, but this is not indicated nor known if the USPS allows this anymore.

A flat package will still fit in a USPS box or if picked up from a dorm pickup box. Over amount of postage would ensure that it was delivered and not returned due to IP.

A over-sized package will not fit in a USPS box due to possible bombing or drug shipments and require a personal visit to the USPS or a box store. Metered postage at that point of sale will give the distance from the campus if is the case by way of tracking the metering machine by it's stamped number. The actual post mark may then might only come from the bulk center.

Ishmael
by Daniel Quinn
Ismael is an impassioned dialogue on our human future from a unique and illuminating perspective.

263 pages, paperback, Bantam, 1992, $14.95
Praise for Ishmael
“A thoughtful, fearlessly low-key novel about the role of our species on the planet . . . The state of the planet and what is probably the only way to its salvation are laid out for us with an originality and a clarity that few would deny.”—Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, The New York Times Book Review

Winner of the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship
About Daniel Quinn
Quotes from Ishmael
“ ‘Man’s destiny was to conquer and rule the world, and this is what he’s done—almost. He hasn’t quite made it, and it looks as though this may be his undoing. The problem is that man’s conquest of the world has itself devastated the world. And in spite of all the mastery we’ve attained, we don’t have enough mastery to stop devastating the world—or to repair the devastation we’ve already wrought. We’ve poured our poisons into the world as though it were a bottomless pit—and we go on gobbling them up. It’s hard to imaging how the world could survive another century of this abuse, but nobody’s really doing anything about it. It’s a problem our children will have to solve, or their children.
“ ‘Only one thing can save us. We have to increase our mastery of the world. All this damage has come about through our conquest of the world, but we have to go on conquering it until our rule is absolute. Then, when we’re in complete control, everything will be fine. We’ll have fusion power. No pollution. We’ll turn the rain on and off. We’ll grow a bushel of wheat in a square centimeter. We’ll turn the oceans into farms. We’ll control the weather—no more hurricanes, no more tornadoes, no more droughts, no more untimely frosts. We’ll make the clouds release their water over the land instead of dumping it uselessly into the oceans. All the life processes of this planet will be where they belong— where the gods meant them to be—in our hands. And we’ll manipulate them the way a programmer manipulates a computer.

” ‘And that’s where it stands right now. We have to carry the conquest forward. And carrying it forward is either going to destroy the world or turn it into a paradise—into the paradise it was meant to be under human rule.’ “

Eco Books note: The ideas expressed in the above quote are ironic. Some of our readers are concerned that people may not understand this quote is ironic, and that the message of Ishmael is the opposite of the quote. Please note the irony.

Ishmael does not have a Table of Contents

Brothers and sisters ... probably meaning, all people of color. Perhaps also including Muslims, we’ll see about that one.

<< The return address was A. Ishmael. >>

Thanks. Catherine Herron on FoxNews specifically said “Ishmael Ax” but since they presumably only got that from watching NBC, it must be off.

But this Ismail/Ishmael Ax or A. Ishmael is clearly an important identity element of this a-hole.

He had it marked on his arm, it’s been asserted it was his gamer ID that has since been deleted by XBoxLive and now on the return address.

I bet there is more light on the meaning of this in the note and/or in the NBC materials or in other things found in his room, and the MSM and NBC are for some reason dragging their feet in making more of it clear, but it will all come out eventually.
