I'm considering setting up a Linux box and running Parallels to open a WinXP Virtual Machine to run some applications. I figure I'll have fewer crashes, more security, and the ability to run a wide variety of SW. But I don't know anyone who's tried to do this.
It seems like it would be more convenient (and more flexible) than a dual-boot setup.
No matter which distro I use I’ve never been able to get Ubuntu to work on my machine, sigh.
I just use the free VMware Server product.
I couldn't get 6.10 to install on my old, old machine and I'm a fairly savvy Linux guy. I ended up installing 6.06 (which installed fine) and then doing an in-place upgrade to 6.10.
Now that I've used it for a little bit, I have to say that it takes some getting used to. No root login, sudo for everything, is very different from the other distros I've worked with.
See my post 13, it may work for you. My 6.10 install kept hanging at 73% complete.
I don't particularly relish the idea of doing two installs, especially since I once lost everything simply by re-installing Litestep after not using it for awhile, which I've used on nearly every machine I've ever owned.
I think I just need to replace this thing anyway.

You might have missed the box labeled “Check here if you need the alternate desktop cd suited for computers with less than 256MB of RAM” when you went to download Ubuntu.
