O.K. Freepers. How about ranking how the candidates impressed you in the first GOP Debate in the order of #1, #2, #3.
I must say I rank them thusly in order of being most impressive:
#1. Mitt Romney
#2. Tommy Thompson
#3. Governor Huckabee
With the exception of Ron Paul, who should not have been on the stage, I was least impressed with Gilmore.
Guess what pal, we where attacked after he was elected....
Paul on Iraq War = NONO
I’ll add #6. Huckabee
He sounded good, but I’ve heard he isn’t that strong a fiscal conservative.
Come on, Capt. Tom...the guy was the Governor of Massachusetts! The guy had to swim around in an ocean of Moonbattery up here and try to get stuff done!
I was just looking at the bios on all the candidates, and Mitt Romney has done more outside of Politics than any of the other candidates, and had done a good job at it too. Look at what he did with Bain and the Olympics.
I really don’t think he is an empty suit.
I DO look at people like Bill Clinton or Barak Obama as empty suits, although I suspect Bill could have been successful outside politics if he chose the correct profession...like snake oil salesman...:)
Romney, hands down.
but at least he's consistent
But, as anoather poster said earlier, Ron Paul the Libertarian wanted to jail Scooter Libby and take away his Liberty because Ron Paul (the Libertarian) disagreed with his politics.
What utter hypocrisy!!!
I thought it was great the way he ignored that puffball question about if he was a compassionate conservative. He paid for that microphone and wasn't going to waste his time talking about that!
So is Chuck Schumer, but I would never vote for him for President.
I watched some of the debate to see Ron Paul speak, I was not impressed with Paul.
I was pleasantly surprised by the whole crew. One thing that was clear: Rudy didn’t stand out in any way. Other than that, McCain seemed a little uneven, Tommy Thompson was terrific, and Mitt Romney was excellent. Tancredo is in over his head, Hunter was good, but not memorable, and Ron Paul was Ron Paul. Gilmore and Huckabee were very good. Brownback was okay.
My ranking:
1. Gilmore
2. Romney
3. T. Thompson
I agree. This pretty much puts the fork in Hunter.
“REMEMBER SAN JACINTO!
Why not throw in a victory too?”
Well........
You do have a good point.
I suggest that we do an encore performance for those that are “historically challenged”.....el Presidente’ Bush and his pals in Mexico City?
Ya with me?
The most striking thing to me about the debate was that not a single one of the ten men on the stage came across as “presidential.”
Rmney has some good answers, but there’s just something about him that ain’t quite right. Canned answers, too slick - not someone that you want to trust with the highest office in the land.
McCain was passionate and effective in defense of the war. Otherwise, he seemed uncomfortable and a couple of times like he lost his train of thought.
Rudy was at ease and comfortable on the stage. He got a pass on RKBA, which was never mentioned, if I remember correctly. And Matthews did’t ask him about providing sanctuary for illegals in defiance of U.S. immigration laws.
I think Duncan Hunter did himself some good. Good answers, especially on military matters where he has a lot of expertise.
Brownback almost got through the entire 90 minutes without shooting himself in the foot. But at the very end, he put forth his idea to divide up Iraq - a plan he shares qwith Joe Biden.
Tancredo came across as much less of a loose cannon than he actually is, which has to help his campaign.
Tommy Thompson was the “it’s all about me” guy. He wasn’t very impressive.
I can’t remember a thing that Gilmore said. Very forgettable guy.
And Ron Paul - my God, what a terrible stage presence! His voice is too high-pitched and strident. Very nervous-sounding. And his libertarian patent medicines just won’t sell with the conservative base.
There’s not a worthy successor to Ronald Reagan in the bunch. Could Fred Thompson have done himself some good by being there? Perhaps. The format of 60 and 30 second answers would have been one that Fred, who is experienced in writing Radio commentaries to fit a time constraint, would have excelled in.
But I don’t think he hurt himself by not participating. The venue of the Ronald Reagan library only drives home the point that wasn’t an effective Reagan disciple in the spotlight tonight.
Maybe he thinks or knows that Scooter did something wrong or against the law and doesn’t care about protecting the party over it. Bush will pardon him anyway.
I know, yet even today just about anyone can walk through that border at any time.
I disagree, I think “family values” matter right from the get go, and believe me, a lot of people are paying attention. Don’t underestimate the electorate.
Here...let me make your day:
"I would rather have a good Marine, even a ruined one, than anything in the world when there are chips down." Ernest Hemingway
(and Hemingway was a guy who knew something about men at war...)
Semper Fi to YOU, and thanks for your service...
” I would vote for Ron Paul to be the first to go.
Dr. Paul should NOT have been in this debate from the git-go.
He IS a frigging “LIBERTARIAN” (FLAKE) that can only be elected in his district by running as a “REPUBLICAN” (RINO).
The smart money in these parts (SE TEXAS) says that Dr. Paul will be sent back to his medical practice in the coming primary.
Your analysis is great. I’m not in total agreement with your rankings. I was just not impressed with Gilmore but a lot of people were.
