If you receive a call from 000-000-0000, pick up but remain silent. You’ll likely be able to hold that connection for a long time as long as you make no noise, otherwise, you’ll trigger the next available marketer to give you their pitch.
I hang up with speaking.

Report these caller ID hidden numbers or 000-000-0000 calls to the FCC https://esupport.fcc.gov/form1088/consumer.do

There is a website (sorry I don't have it handy) that demonstrates how you can make a call showing ANY phone number and any name to anyone. I put in "Mickey Mouse" and a number of "777-666-5555" when I tested it and sure enough that's how the call showed up in a second or two on my home phone.

The problem is people are trusting the Caller ID name to legitimize that it really is their bank or whatever and they should be educated that Caller ID is completely unreliable.

Land lines have been taken over by tele marketers.

Telemarketers are scum, and they are right down there with Lawyers, and Collection Agencies.

I really want to get rid of my personal land line, but some of the older folks in my life, simply cannot deal with such radical action.

More than 90 percent of the incoming calls to my home phone are garbage calls, and one of these days, I am going to do something about it that will make a difference.

I have no idea what that could be, but at least I said it here, and that little bit of release, has just made this a better day for me.

Cancel the land line and get the cell phone, give the new number to all your friends and relatives, tell them (the older folks) you will be easier to contact! (That should work for you!)

With our cell phone we can be anywhere in the U.S., and for the folks back home, it is a local call for them to reach us!

I’ve seen it too, I don’t answer any calls if I don’t know who is calling. I figure that if it’s important, they will leave a message.

I take it one more step. I have Caller-ID, but I have not enabled voicemail on my land line (I do use it on my cell-phone, which is unlisted).

I will not answer a call from a number I don't know, period. Of course, that includes 800 numbers, and anything which reads "unknown caller" or "number blocked" on the Caller-ID display.

When I leave my house, upon return, I'll scroll through the Caller-ID record, and return the calls of folks I know. But really, anyone who knows me knows my mobile number, and they've figured out that they have a better chance of reaching me if they call there.

Caller-ID, when used logically, is a great invention. Would you open your front door without looking to see who is knocking? If so, why on earth would anyone answer an anonymous phone call?

Nope, I get "Unknown caller."

That's enough to not answer.

I spend half my day at work on the phone, for the most part I don’t speak to anyone when I’m at home.

The current one, on our home Land-line, is a recorded message for a specific person, with our Last Name. It asks us to press a number or number string IF that person is unknown to us.

Is this VALID? Or should we hang up?

It is usually a phone card.

Telemarketers use automated “dialers” that call lists of phone numbers that they usually purchased from other telemarketers, or your credit card company.

Once you answer, the dialer transfers the call to an available agent who will provide the sales pitch du jour. The pause is the call getting tranferred. Sometimes you’ll go into a queue or your call will get dropped because the queue is full.

Have you tried the national "Do Not Call" list?   I used to get a lot of telemarketing calls, but after I got on that list I don't get any at all.  It's a huge fine if a telemarketer calls someone who is on that list.

I rarely have my glasses on when answering the phone, hence I couldn't read the ID, but if it's a telemarketer I immediately say "wait just a moment" and then throw the phone under a pillow or in a drawer.  You'd be amazed how long some of these people will stay on the line.

One reason you might get silence is because alot of these places the telemarketer (or market research interviewer if its a poll or survey) does not actually dial the phone number - the computer dials the phone number. These computers are usually slow computers and the number is dialed and you’ve picked up the phone and said hello before the intro page shows up on the telemarketers computer. So there seems to be a few seconds of delay there. I used to work at a market research firm and that was how they did it there.

LVD,

This is probably not the explanation in your case but the internet phone service “SkypeOut” also comes up as 000-000-0000 when I tested it on my telephone last year.

This may have changed since (the SkypeOut service is no longer free) but just so everybody knows that 000-000-0000 does not automatically means telemarketer.

Chris.

The big disadvantage that I see with this plan is that when you do this your line will be tied up, and Raquel Welch won't be able to get through when she calls!

Cancel the land line and get the cell phone,

You know, that sounded like a great idea until the other day when a tornado came through my community. I couldn't make a call with the wireless (I called the neighbors to see if they wanted to join me in the storm shelter), but my land line worked fine.

Most of the time, wireless is just fine. YMMV.
